From small yoga classes in the 1970s to studying with teachers and traditions around the world, Margot Kitchen has witnessed — and helped shape — an extraordinary period in Alberta’s yoga history.

Her own journey has crossed many traditions, teachers and decades. Through it all, she came to value not one “right” way of practising yoga, but the richness of different paths and what each can offer.

That spirit has also been part of YAA from its earliest years: bringing different yoga communities together under one umbrella, while honouring the diversity of their traditions.

In Pioneer Interview #6, Margot reflects on more than 50 years of practice, teaching, change and discovery — and on the role yoga continues to play throughout a lifetime.

Discover Margot’s story and more voices from YAA’s history through the Pioneer Interview Series at yoga.ca/pioneers/.

What begins as a personal practice can grow into a lifetime of learning, teaching and connection.

In Thanks for the Memories, Audrey Bell-Hiller reflects on a yoga journey spanning more than two decades — from discovering a practice she wanted to share with others, to becoming a YAA Permanent Certified Senior Teacher, mentoring new teachers, and continuing to teach in the communities where her journey began.

As YAA celebrates 50 years, Audrey’s story is a beautiful reminder of the relationships that grow alongside our practice — and the sense of belonging that can be created when yoga is shared.

What happens when yoga becomes more than a practice — and becomes a lifelong journey of discovering your true self?

At 29, Sandra Sammartino turned to yoga during a difficult chapter of her life. What began as a way to find relief from physical pain, anxiety and emotional turmoil became a decades-long exploration of yoga, meditation, breathwork and energy.

Sandra studied with teachers from different traditions, including Iyengar, Sivananda and Kundalini, but never confined herself to a single lineage. Instead, she took what resonated with her and continued developing her own practice.

Her philosophy is beautifully simple:

“I was just teaching what was right for me.”

For Sandra, yoga is ultimately about returning to our true self, learning to balance the dark and the light, and developing the creativity and intuition to find our own way.

Her connection with the Yoga Association of Alberta spans nearly five decades. She describes YAA as a “fantastic organization” because of its inclusive spirit and its ability to bring together practitioners from different traditions.

And perhaps one of Sandra’s greatest gifts as a teacher is helping others discover their own path:

“My gift is to help people… give them a little boot towards their true self.”

🎥 Watch YAA Pioneer Interview #5 with Sandra Sammartino to hear more about her remarkable yoga journey, her experiences with teachers and traditions across decades, and the wisdom she continues to share.

What began with a simple question on the radio became part of Alberta’s yoga history.

When Dr. Mohan Singh arrived at the University of Alberta in 1966, yoga was not yet part of the university landscape. Then, during Canada’s Centennial year, a radio reporter asked: “What is your Centennial project?”

Dr. Singh found himself asking: “Why not do yoga here at the university like you did in India?”

That idea would eventually lead to university yoga courses, research into the physiological effects of yoga, the work of Hubert Dhanaraj, and ultimately the formation of the Yoga Association of Alberta.

In this Pioneer Interview, Dr. Singh reflects on the many unexpected ways yoga found its way into his life and career — from India and the United States to the University of Alberta, from research and teaching to the early days of the YAA.

He also shares a perspective that has remained remarkably simple after more than half a century of practice:

“All you need is your body and your determination and your willingness.”

As we celebrate 50 years of the Yoga Association of Alberta, we’re grateful to hear directly from those who helped plant the seeds of yoga in this province.

How did yoga take root in Alberta? 🧘‍♀️

In the late 1960s, yoga was still relatively unfamiliar in Alberta. A small group of teachers and practitioners began sharing what they had learned, travelling between Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer despite long distances and winter roads.

Their efforts helped lay the groundwork for the Yoga Association of Alberta, established in 1976.

In “How Yoga Caught on in Square Alberta,” Marcia Langenberg looks back at those early years — from the pioneers who introduced yoga to Alberta, to university research, teacher training, and the many traditions that helped shape the province’s growing yoga community.

Originally published in Alberta Views in 2002, the article has been republished in the YAA’s 50th Anniversary edition of Yoga Bridge as we look back on five decades of yoga in Alberta.
