There is a difference between Islamic Reformation and Islamic apologism. The first proposes sound theological arguments to establish a narrative while the other denies there is any need for a reform because any bad thing has nothing to do with Islam.

It is wrong to single out one factor and ignore all the others when it comes to Islamist extremism. Ideology definitely plays the significant role but foreign policy could influence.
In order to properly understand Islamism, you have to first properly understand the region ,the religion and the adherents. Unlike some other religions, Islam occupies an outstanding loyalty. Muslims are very loyal to Islam. They havent secularized. They arent Islamists but they could be conservative. A foreign invasion might not be the only reason for extremism but it could however lead an already conservative Muslim towards a more radical side. So ideology is the dominant factor, other factors contribute to leading to that dominant factor.
Dont undermine or ignore any of them.
