Volya is incredibly proud to call Canada our home, and to play a part in representing the vast community of Ukrainian- Canadians scattered across the nation.

To celebrate, here’s a throwback to our performance with at last year’s Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival! 🤩🍁

Tonight marks Івана Купала (Ivana Kupala), the Ukrainian celebration of the summer solstice. 🌿

Traditionally, women gather flowers and greenery to weave вінки (flower crowns) and adorn them with candles before tossing them in the river for men to retrieve. At dusk, a large bonfire is lit with people dancing hand in hand around it. If a couple successfully jumps over the fire three times, their union is said to be unbreakable. 🕯️

Volya’s Ivana Kupala dance, pictured above at our Korinnya show this past February, celebrates these pagan rituals and honours the traditions surrounding Ukraine’s midsummer festivities. 🌻

Earlier this week, our dancers had the opportunity to share the art and passion of Ukrainian Dance with students at St. Lucy Catholic Elementary School!

Dancers had a wonderful time demonstrating technique from various regions and leading the students in a short combo. Thank you St Lucy School for having us!

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented annually to a Volya alumnus in recognition of their outstanding contributions and continued support of the ensemble and Ukrainian dance community.

This year, we are proud to present this award to Kelsey Kelly! 🌟

Kelsey joined Volya in 1998 and dedicated an impressive 22 years to the ensemble. As an accomplished dancer, she spent countless hours in the studio rehearsing, refining technique, and volunteering her time. Her favourite memories of Volya are the many tours and performances, which allowed her to build several lifelong friendships.

As a longtime Volya School instructor, Kelsey continues to inspire generations of dancers with her passion and enthusiasm for Ukrainian dance.

Congratulations, Kelsey! 👏
