The 2026/27 season is almost here.

The Golden Bears hit the road for a pair of non-conference matchups to open the season, taking on Red Deer Polytech Kings in Red Deer on Friday before heading to Camrose to face UofA’s Augustana Vikings on Saturday.

Two games. One weekend. Time to get to work.

Introducing Dan Wiebe, Golden Bears Hockey’s Assistant Coach and Golden Bears alumnus.

As a Golden Bears Alumni, Dan brings extensive professional hockey experience to the coaching staff. His playing career included stops in the ECHL, IHL, and DEL2. Most recently he has been a Coach Mentor with Hockey Alberta and has prior experience as both an assistant coach and head coach in the ECHL.

With experience playing at the professional level and a strong connection to the Golden Bears program, Dan brings valuable perspective and knowledge to the development of our athletes.

We’re excited to welcome Dan back to the Golden Bears Hockey program as part of the coaching staff for the 2026/27 season.

Introducing Ellary Witherspoon, Golden Bears Hockey’s Social Media Marketer.

A fourth-year University of Alberta marketing student, Ellary brings a creative perspective and diverse experience across multiple areas of marketing to the Golden Bears Hockey program.

As the Marketing Director of the University’s Sports Networking Association, Ellary has developed valuable skills in social media, communications, and brand development, experience she’ll bring to the continued growth of Golden Bears Hockey’s digital presence.

We’re excited to welcome Ellary to the Golden Bears Hockey program as part of the staff for the 2026/27 season.

Introducing Erin Brennan, Golden Bears Hockey’s Mental Performance Consultant.

As the founder of Mind Over Matter Performance, Erin works with athletes to develop the mental skills, confidence, focus, and resilience needed to perform at their best.

We’re excited to have Erin supporting Golden Bears Hockey and helping our athletes strengthen their performance both on and off the ice for the 2026/27 season.

Introducing Shawn Germain, Golden Bears Hockey’s Assistant Coach.

Shawn brings a wealth of playing experience to the Golden Bears, having played collegiate and professional hockey with organizations including the University of Waterloo, Reading Royals, and Ontario Reign. Germain most recently spent time with the Camrose Kodiaks as an Assistant Coach and Director of Player Development.

His experience at the professional and collegiate provides a valuable perspective as he works with our athletes both on and off the ice.

We’re excited to have Shawn join the Golden Bears Hockey coaching staff for the 2026/27 season.

Introducing Brian Shackel, Golden Bears Hockey’s Skills and Skating Coach.

With a Master’s degree in Sports Biomechanics and over 15 years of experience in hockey skating development, Brian specializes in edgework, quickness, transitions, and deceptive movement.

As the founder of Making Stridz Athlete Development, Brian combines sport science, video analysis, and playing experience to help athletes improve skating efficiency, power, and movement in game situations.

We’re excited to have Brian as part of the Golden Bears Hockey coaching staff for the 2026/27 season.
