The Alberta Kodokan Black Belt Association, commonly known as Judo Alberta, is the governing body for the sport of Judo in the province of Alberta.
Our mission is to promote the principles and teachings of the sport of Kodokan judo to all levels in all parts of Alberta. The Association, incorporated in 1960, is a non-profit organization which operates on funds from the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation, fundraising programs, and membership fees. Judo Alberta serves the needs of its 1,600 members which consists of Judoka (athletes), instructors, coaches, officials, and supportive members.

Kelly Palmer and Wes Enns competed in the Nordic Open Judo Kata Tournament in Helsinki Finland on August 22, and won Gold in each of Katame no Kata and Ju no Kata, and Silver in Itsutsu no Kata (Gold was won by former world champions and current European medallists from Germany).

Congratulations to Emiliya Aliyeva today for battling her way to a 7th place finish at the 2026 Cadet World Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador. She opened the day beating the 16th ranked Maia GVALADZE from Georgia with a rolling choke and then she defeated the number 8th ranked Ballalo COULIBALY TOURE from Spain with a counter in golden score. Unfortunately she could not keep the momentum going in her next two matches. She fought bravely and showed a lot of determination. Great Job! Judo Alberta and Judo Canada are very proud of you! Onto the team matches tomorrow!

Judo Alberta has wrapped up the 2026 Hokkaido-Alberta Sports exchange. It was a whirlwind adventure that exposed our athletes to fabulous judo and an amazing cultural experience. There is a sense of sadness as we pack our bags for the long journey home.
The athletes had an opportunity to training ans create life long friendships.
We would like to thank the government of Alberta for selecting judo for this prestigious program.

Tonight we visited the Sapporo Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium from the 1972 Olympics. We had incredible views of the city and a better understanding of how brave ski jumpers are! Following supper it was time for shopping in the shopping district!

It was demanding but the Judo Alberta athletes pushed through their fatigue to make it a great day of judo. Hours and hours of randori!đŸ’ª

It was another busy day in Hokkaido. The Alberta Team traveled to Shikoku Town the sister city to Stoney Plain, our Alberta athletes learned how to make Gyoza and rice bowls. This was a fantastic experience and our group made new friends and picked up a new skill.
After sampling their own cuisine we made our way back to Obihiro City for a training camp with several local High Schools. The athletes worked hard every session and started. There were 108 students on the mats.

Today the Alberta Judo Team had a great experience on the mats training with 40 high school students from Hokkaido. It was nice for our judoka to also meet up again woth a few judoka who came to Canada last December.
Our athlete faired well during the session, it was challenging because we are guests and the coaches want to provide a good training session.

Following the judo practice we went to a Japanese base ball game . The stadium was huge and the crowd was electric! A baseball game in Japan is full of chants and songs encouraging their home team. It was a very good time for all!
