FROM MAGNETS TO MAGNETS: PRECIOUS KASANGALA MAKES TANZANIA MOVE
By Wendson Mavoro
The magnetic pull of basketball has taken Precious Kasangala from the mining town of Mufulira on Zambia’s Copperbelt to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest urban and economic centre, where he has signed a three month contract with Magnets Basketball Club.
For Kasangala, the move represents another significant step in a basketball journey that has seen him establish himself as one of the Copperbelt’s dependable defensive and rebounding players.
Known for his athleticism, physical presence and ability to dominate the boards, Kasangala became a household name at Magnets Basketball Club in Mufulira.
His performances during the Copperbelt Basketball Association (CBA) season played an important role in Magnets’ championship-winning campaign.
Kasangala emerged as a key contributor on both ends of the court, particularly through his rebounding, shot blocking and defensive work, consistently providing his team with energy and physicality.
His impressive form continued into the national championship, where Magnets represented the Copperbelt after winning the CBA title.
Although the Mufulira side’s campaign eventually came to an end against defending Zambia Basketball Federation (ZBF) champions Matero Magic, Kasangala’s performances did not go unnoticed.
His consistent displays subsequently attracted the attention of the Tanzanian Magnets Basketball Club, paving the way for his move to Dar es Salaam on a three month contract.
The transfer gives Kasangala an opportunity to test himself in a different basketball environment while gaining further international experience.
Kasangala is, however, no stranger to international basketball. In 2022, he featured on the Matero Magic roster during the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Road to BAL qualifiers, gaining valuable exposure at continental level.
A year later, he was selected for Zambia’s 3x3 national team that represented the country in Accra, Ghana.
With experience at club, national and international level, Kasangala arrives in Tanzania with a proven track record and a reputation for doing the work that often goes beyond the statistics.
His rebounding, defensive intensity, athleticism and ability to protect the paint are expected to add value to his new team.
Interestingly, Kasangala’s move can be described as a journey from Magnets to Magnets, from the Magnets of Mufulira, where he established himself, to another Magnets outfit in Dar es Salaam, where he now begins a new chapter of his career.
The Tanzanian Magnets Basketball Club competes in the Dar es Salaam Bantam League and is affiliated with Da City Basketball Club, one of Tanzania’s prominent basketball organisations.
The move provides Kasangala with an opportunity to broaden his experience and further establish himself beyond the Zambian basketball scene.
For a player whose game has been built around hard work, defence and rebounding, the three-month Tanzanian adventure could prove to be another important stepping stone in an increasingly international basketball career.
