APPRECIATION TO RYDSOM ZAMBIA 💜
__________________________________

The Zambia Pool Union would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Rydsom Zambia for the incredible support they have rendered to the pool fraternity on the Copperbelt over the past two months.

With over ZMW30,000 pumped into pool tournaments so far, Rydsom Zambia has demonstrated that corporate support can make a real and lasting difference in the lives of our players, their families and communities. This support has helped create opportunities, put food on tables and given many young people a positive environment in which to develop their talent.

We are forever grateful for believing in pool and for recognising its potential beyond the game itself. Your partnership is a powerful example of what can happen when business and sport come together to uplift communities.

We therefore call upon other stakeholders, companies and corporate entities across Zambia to come on board and support pool as a sport. Pool is more than entertainment—it is an opportunity for economic empowerment, talent development and poverty alleviation, while providing our young people with a positive alternative to drug and alcohol abuse, crime and early marriages.

With the right investment, pool can create livelihoods, build confidence, discover national and international talent, and give thousands of young Zambians something meaningful to work towards.

Rydsom Zambia, thank you for moving smart—and for helping us move the sport forward. 🇿🇲🎱💜

A Message of Hope, Unity and Continuity to the Pool Fraternity 🇿🇲🎱

Yesterday, 13th August 2026, we exercised our democratic right to vote. As we now patiently await the results, let us remember that our unity is greater than our political differences.

The past few weeks have been challenging. Tensions have been high, and unfortunately, even friendships have sometimes been tested because of our different political choices. But that is the nature of democracy — we will not always agree, and political diversity is inevitable.

Now that we have cast our votes, let us put the politics aside and embrace one another once again. Let us shake hands, share a smile, forgive where necessary, and return to the relationships and friendships that existed before the campaign season.

Whatever the outcome, we remain one pool fraternity, one family and one community. Our tables, cues, tournaments, friendships and dreams for the growth of pool in Zambia remain.

Let us not allow politics to destroy what we have built together.

As we wait for the results, let us remain peaceful, patient, respectful and hopeful. May Zambia remain peaceful, and may we all continue to live positively and support one another.

The elections will pass. The results will come. But our friendships and our fraternity must continue.

Let us pick up where we left off. ❤️🇿🇲🎱

Peace. Unity. Hope. Continuity.

— From one pool player to the entire pool fraternity.

Sponsorship in Zambian Pool: A Partnership, Not Free Money

By Amukena Mukumbuta (member of the ZPU DC)

Pool is growing fast in Zambia. Every year I see new talent coming up, more tournaments on the calendar, and more people paying attention to the game. It's exciting to watch.
But as the sport grows, I keep running into the same misunderstanding, over and over: what does it actually mean to be sponsored?

A lot of players believe that once someone agrees to sponsor them, that person is now on the hook for everything — tournament fees, transport, accommodation, equipment, all of it, forever, with nothing expected back.
That's not sponsorship. That's just asking someone to pay your bills. And honestly, it's not fair to the sponsor either.

If we want pool in Zambia to be taken seriously as a professional sport, we need to start with one simple idea:
Sponsorship is a partnership. It is not a donation.

So what is sponsorship, really?
At its core, sponsorship is an agreement where both sides get something out of it.
The sponsor puts in money, gear, clothing, transport, entry fees — whatever the support looks like.

The player puts in value. Usually that means promoting the sponsor, building their reputation, bringing in customers, and carrying themselves professionally wherever they go.
Both sides give something. Both sides should walk away better off. The moment only one side is benefiting, the whole thing starts to fall apart.

A sponsor doesn't have to be a big company
When we hear "sponsor," most of us picture some large corporation writing a cheque. But that's rarely how it actually works.

A sponsor could just as easily be:
-A small business
-A local company
-A sports club
-A successful entrepreneur
-A working professional
-A family member
-Or simply someone who believes in you and wants to help

Here's the thing they all have in common: whoever they are, they're using money they worked hard to earn. Whether it's a big company or a small shop down the road, every kwacha they hand over means something to them.

Where does that money actually come from?
This is where I think a lot of the confusion starts. People talk about sponsors as if they have a pile of money sitting around just for pool players.
They don't.
That money came from somewhere. From years of hard work. From customers who chose to buy from them. From savings they built up. From risks they took in their own business. Sometimes, it even comes from someone giving up their own personal income because they believe in you.
Sponsorship is never free money. Someone earned it first, and then chose to invest it in you.

Think of it as an investment, not a gift
Every sponsor is hoping for something back — and it's not always cash.
It might be:
-More people knowing their business exists
-New customers walking through the door
-A better reputation in the community
-More trust from the public
-Good publicity

Here's a simple way to think about it. Say a sponsor puts K30,000 into a player over a year and gets nothing back for it — no exposure, no goodwill, nothing. Would they keep doing that next year?
Probably not. And that's not because they're being stingy. It's because every investment needs a reason behind it.

Remember — the sponsor is taking a risk too
This is easy for players to forget. When someone sponsors you, they have no guarantee they'll get anything back.
You might lose more than you win. You might go quiet for months. You might do something that damages your name — and by extension, theirs. Your sponsor is accepting all of that risk the moment they sign on.
That's why sponsorship runs on trust. The sponsor is trusting you to represent them well. Don't take that for granted.
Your job isn't just to play well

A lot of players think their only responsibility is to perform at the table. Winning matters, sure. But it's only one piece of the puzzle.
Once you're sponsored, you're also an ambassador. People see you, and they're seeing your sponsor too. So how you dress, how you speak, how you treat people around you — all of it reflects back on the person who's backing you.

Ask yourself: how can I help my sponsor grow?
A few simple things go a long way:
1. Wear the sponsor's branding with pride
2. Thank them publicly, not just once
3. Talk about them on social media
4. Introduce your own fans and contacts to their business
5. Show up looking professional in photos and interviews
6. Be present at community events
7. Just be someone people respect

None of this is complicated. It's just about remembering there's someone else invested in your success.
Winning isn't the only way to add value
Trophies matter, but they're not everything. Picture two players.

One wins tournament after tournament but never mentions their sponsor, never posts about them, skips promotional events, and barely engages with fans.
The other wins less often, but constantly promotes their sponsor, shows up professionally, posts engaging content, and gets people excited to support the sponsor's business.

Who do you think keeps their sponsor longer?
For most sponsors, it's the second player — because sponsorship is about the value you create, not just the matches you win.
Sponsors have a responsibility too

This isn't a one-way street. A good sponsor should also:
1. Keep their word
2. Treat the player fairly
3. Communicate honestly
4. Deliver support when they said they would
5. Respect the player as a person
6. Help the player grow
7. Build the relationship on trust, not control

When both sides hold up their end, the partnership actually works.

Put it in writing
Most sponsorship disputes happen simply because nothing was ever written down. A short, clear agreement can settle a lot of confusion before it becomes a problem:
-What support is actually being provided?
-What's expected of the player in return?
-How long does this arrangement last?
-How will both sides know if it's working?
-When will you sit down and review it together?
It doesn't need to be complicated. It just needs to be clear.

To the players
If you're chasing sponsorship, stop asking "who can sponsor me?" and start asking a better question:
"Why should someone sponsor me?"
What do you actually bring to the table? How will you help your sponsor succeed? Why should they pick you over someone equally talented?
Answer those honestly, and you'll suddenly look a lot more attractive to the people who could back you.

To the sponsors
Supporting sport is one of the best things you can do for young people and for your community. But don't sponsor out of sympathy or friendship alone.
Look for players who understand professionalism, respect, and responsibility. Back the ones who see themselves as partners, not people waiting to be given something.

Where this leaves us
Pool in Zambia has real potential. We have the talent, we have supporters who love the game, and we have businesses and individuals willing to invest in it.
What's missing is a shared understanding of how sponsorship actually works.
When players understand that sponsorship is earned, not owed, they become better ambassadors. When sponsors see genuine value coming back to them, they invest with more confidence. And when both sides pull in the same direction, everyone comes out ahead — the player, the sponsor, and the sport itself.

Final thought: sponsorship was never about someone giving you money because you're talented or because they like you. It's about two sides helping each other succeed. The sponsor brings resources they worked hard for. The player brings talent, character, and influence. Put those together with trust and clear expectations, and you get something powerful enough to grow careers, grow businesses, and grow a sport.

Let's move away from entitlement, and toward partnership. Because the best sponsorship isn't one where somebody wins — it's one where everybody does.
