🔴 LIVERPOOL VS CHELSEA THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT LIVERPOOL ARE MISSING

I've been watching Liverpool and Chelsea closely, and I don't think the biggest difference between these two teams is simply individual quality.

The bigger difference is BALANCE, STRUCTURE and SQUAD PROFILE.

Chelsea finished 10th last season, but under Xabi Alonso they already look more aggressive, confident and dangerous in transition. Their 4–3 win over Brighton showed both sides of their game: frightening attacking quality, but also defensive problems that Liverpool can exploit.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have a new manager, a heavily rebuilt squad and a completely different tactical direction under Iraola. The potential is obvious but so are the gaps.

So what exactly is Liverpool missing?

👇 LET'S BREAK IT DOWN.

🔴 1. LIVERPOOL NEED A PROPER DEFENSIVE FOUNDATION

This is probably the biggest issue.

Liverpool have attacking players capable of winning games, but the team doesn't always look secure when possession is lost.

Iraola wants aggressive football.

He wants pressing.

He wants the full-backs involved.

He wants numbers forward.

But aggressive football requires an equally aggressive defensive structure.

When Liverpool lose the ball, we need players already positioned to stop the counter.

At the moment, there are too many situations where the midfield gets bypassed and the defenders are suddenly exposed.

You cannot play high-risk football without excellent rest defence.

🔴 2. THE FULL-BACKS ARE A HUGE QUESTION MARK

This is one area where I think Liverpool fans have a legitimate concern.

We need full-backs who can:

✅ Defend 1v1
✅ Position themselves correctly
✅ Win aerial duels
✅ Progress the ball
✅ Provide width
✅ Recover quickly after losing possession

It isn't enough to be good going forward.

And it isn't enough to be a good defender.

Modern full-backs have to do everything.

Liverpool's full-back positions currently don't always give us that complete package.

And when both full-backs push forward, the midfield has to compensate.

If it doesn't, we become extremely vulnerable.

🔴 3. WE NEED A TRUE DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

This is where the Fabinho comparisons come from.

I'm not saying Liverpool need another Fabinho.

But we need someone who understands the position at an elite level.

Someone who knows:

When to press.
When to tackle.
When to slow the game.
When to stay.
When to cover.
When to commit a tactical foul.

Most importantly:

someone who protects the centre-backs.

Gravenberch is an excellent footballer.

Mac Allister is an excellent footballer.

Szoboszlai is an excellent footballer.

But Liverpool need to ask whether the midfield combination gives the defence enough protection.

Because right now, there are moments where the answer is no.

🔴 4. CHELSEA HAVE SOMETHING LIVERPOOL NEED MORE OF — ATHLETICISM

Look at Chelsea's attacking options.

They can attack space.

They can transition quickly.

They have players capable of carrying the ball over distance.

They can turn a defensive situation into an attacking opportunity within seconds.

Liverpool have quality too, but the team needs more verticality and explosiveness across the entire XI.

This is one reason a player like Bradley Barcola fits the direction Liverpool appear to be taking.

The more players you have who can beat defenders and attack space, the harder you are to defend against.

🔴 5. BUT DON'T COPY CHELSEA'S DEFENSIVE MODEL

This is important.

Chelsea have scored four against Brighton and created plenty of attacking excitement.

But they also conceded three.

Their defensive issues are still obvious.

So I'm not saying:

“Chelsea are perfect and Liverpool need to become Chelsea.”

Absolutely not.

I'm saying Liverpool should look at what Chelsea are doing well while avoiding their weaknesses.

Chelsea have shown that attacking football can create momentum.

Liverpool need to combine that attacking threat with better defensive control.

🔴 6. LIVERPOOL NEED MORE CONTROL IN MIDFIELD

This is perhaps the biggest tactical difference.

When Liverpool are ahead, can we slow the game down?

Can we keep the ball for five minutes?

Can we force the opponent to chase?

Can we kill the momentum?

Can we protect a 1–0 lead?

These are questions of game management.

Liverpool have players who can play beautiful football.

But title-winning teams also know when NOT to play beautiful football.

Sometimes you need to suffer.

Sometimes you need to control the tempo.

Sometimes you need to win ugly.

🔴 7. WE NEED MORE LEADERSHIP

This doesn't mean Liverpool don't have leaders.

Van Dijk is a leader.

Alisson is a leader.

Salah was a leader.

But as the squad changes, leadership has to spread across the pitch.

When Liverpool concede, we need somebody immediately saying:

“Calm down. We're still in control.”

When the team starts losing shape:

“Drop.”

When the midfield gets exposed:

“Stay.”

When we need to kill the game:

“Keep the ball.”

That communication is incredibly important.

🔴 8. LIVERPOOL'S ATTACK IS NOT THE PROBLEM

This is where I disagree with some fans.

I don't think Liverpool's biggest problem is creativity.

We've got Wirtz.

We've got Isak.

We've got quality wide players.

We've got attacking depth.

And the expected arrival of Barcola would give Iraola even more explosiveness.

The problem is getting the whole team functioning together.

What's the point of scoring three if we're going to concede three?

What's the point of having 70% possession if the opponent creates the better chances?

What's the point of having five attackers if the midfield can't protect them?

Football is about relationships between the units.

🔴 9. LIVERPOOL NEED A BETTER BENCH

This is another massive difference between competing and actually winning trophies.

You don't win a 60-game season with 11 players.

You need:

Plan A.
Plan B.
Plan C.

If the opposition sits deep who changes the game?

If we're defending a lead who protects it?

If we're losing who can change the tempo?

If the full-back is struggling who replaces him?

If the DM is suspended who steps in?

Squad depth isn't about having famous names.

It's about having different solutions.

Liverpool still need more of that.

🔴 10. IRAOLA DOESN'T NEED TO START AGAIN HE NEEDS TIME

This is where I think Liverpool fans need to be patient.

We have to remember that Iraola is trying to change the way this team plays.

The club has gone through significant transition, and Liverpool's new manager has openly acknowledged problems with passive starts and intensity without the ball.

That doesn't mean criticism isn't allowed.

It absolutely is.

But we shouldn't judge the final version of this Liverpool team after two league games.

At the same time…

Iraola needs to identify the problems quickly.

Because patience doesn't mean ignoring obvious weaknesses.

🔥 SO WHAT DOES LIVERPOOL ACTUALLY NEED?

If I were building this squad specifically for Iraola's football, my priorities would be:

1️⃣ ELITE DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

Someone who can protect the defence and control transitions.

2️⃣ RIGHT-BACK

A complete modern full-back not just an attacking player.

3️⃣ LEFT-BACK

Someone reliable defensively and technically capable of contributing in possession.

4️⃣ CENTRE-BACK DEPTH

Especially someone athletic enough to defend large spaces.

5️⃣ ANOTHER PHYSICAL MIDFIELDER

Someone capable of winning duels and giving Liverpool control when games become physical.

6️⃣ MORE SQUAD DEPTH

Different profiles for different types of games.

🧠 THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIVERPOOL AND CHELSEA

It isn't simply:

“Chelsea have better players.”

It's that Chelsea currently look more comfortable playing their new manager's football.

Liverpool are still trying to find their identity.

And that's understandable.

Chelsea are also far from perfect their 4–3 win showed that their defence can still be exposed badly.

But Liverpool's challenge is bigger than simply improving individual players.

We need to build a team where every player makes the next player better.

The full-back has to trust the midfielder.

The midfielder has to protect the centre-back.

The winger has to help the full-back.

The striker has to connect with the midfield.

And the entire team has to react together when possession is lost.

That's what we're missing.

🔴 LIVERPOOL DON'T NEED A COMPLETE REBUILD.

WE NEED THE RIGHT BALANCE.

The quality is there.

The money has been spent.

The attacking talent is there.

The manager has an exciting philosophy.

Now we need to turn all of that into a complete football team.

Because Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City won't wait for Liverpool to figure it out.

The question isn't whether Liverpool have enough quality to compete.

The question is whether we have enough balance to win.

🚨💣 BREAKING: MAN CITY PUSH FOR CODY GAKPO!

Manchester City have reportedly stepped up their interest in Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo, with an £85M package being discussed. 🔵🇳🇱

Gakpo’s future at Anfield is now becoming a major talking point, especially with Liverpool closing in on Bradley Barcola.

🔴 Liverpool’s position is clear: Gakpo will only be allowed to leave if the club secures the necessary replacement(s).

And honestly… £85M for Gakpo?

That’s a huge amount of money, but there’s another question Liverpool fans need to ask:

👉 Should Liverpool really sell Gakpo to a direct Premier League rival?

Gakpo has already shown his quality at Liverpool. He can play on the left, through the middle and has become an important part of the squad.

Losing him could make sense financially if Barcola arrives and another attacking replacement is secured.

But selling a proven Premier League attacker to Manchester City could come back to haunt us.

🔥 MY TAKE:

If Liverpool are going to sell Gakpo, the replacement has to be secured BEFORE he walks out the door.

No panic.

No weakening the squad.

And definitely no selling to City without getting maximum value.

🔴 LIVERPOOL 2–2 NOTTINGHAM FOREST MY ANALYSIS

This wasn't simply a case of Liverpool being unlucky. There are genuine tactical issues that need to be addressed.

Liverpool had plenty of possession, but Forest still created dangerous opportunities. That tells us something important:

POSSESSION DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN CONTROL.

Liverpool's biggest problem was the speed and purpose of the possession. Too often we moved the ball sideways in front of Forest's defensive block without enough movement to actually break it. We needed more third-man runs, quicker combinations, players receiving between the lines and more movement behind the defence.

When Liverpool increased the tempo, Forest looked much more vulnerable.

🔴 THE BIGGEST CONCERN: TRANSITION DEFENDING

Liverpool want to attack with numbers, but when possession is lost, the team can look exposed.

Forest didn't need long spells of possession to hurt Liverpool. They simply waited for spaces to appear and attacked them quickly.

That's the balance Iraola has to fix.

You can play aggressive, attacking football without leaving your defence completely exposed every time you lose the ball.

🔴 MIDFIELD HAS TO CONTROL THE GAME

This is where I think Liverpool still have work to do.

The midfield needs to provide two things:

CONTROL + PROTECTION.

There were moments when the midfield looked disconnected from both the defence and attack.

If the midfield pushes too high, the defence becomes vulnerable.

If it sits too deep, the attackers become isolated.

The solution isn't necessarily another signing. It's getting the structure, positioning and distances between the players right.

🔴 WIRTZ NEEDS TO BE MORE INVOLVED

Florian Wirtz has the quality to unlock these kinds of games, but Liverpool have to put him in positions where he can receive the ball facing goal.

He shouldn't constantly be receiving with two or three players around him.

His involvement in Muñoz's equaliser showed exactly what Liverpool can get when he operates in dangerous areas.

Get Wirtz closer to the final action.

🔴 ISAK NEEDS SERVICE

Alexander Isak getting his first Premier League goal is a huge positive.

But one goal doesn't hide the bigger issue.

Liverpool need to create more chances for him.

The movement is there. The finishing ability is there.

Now we need to consistently get the ball into the areas where Isak is most dangerous.

A striker of his quality shouldn't spend long periods waiting for service.

🔥 VÍCTOR MUÑOZ WHAT A MOMENT!

This boy deserves serious credit.

Coming on and scoring that equaliser at Anfield when Liverpool desperately needed a response shows character.

But beyond the goal, Muñoz brought urgency and directness.

He was willing to attack the situation instead of simply looking for the safe option.

Iraola now has another attacking weapon to think about.

🔴 THE DEFENCE ISN'T JUST A DEFENSIVE-LINE PROBLEM

It's easy to blame the centre-backs, but I don't think that's the whole story.

Defending starts from the front.

If Liverpool lose the ball and the first press is broken, the midfield needs to slow the counter.

If the midfield gets bypassed, suddenly the defenders are running towards their own goal.

That makes every defender look worse.

So the answer isn't simply:

“Change the centre-backs.”

It's:

“Improve the entire defensive structure.”

🔴 IRAOLA'S BIGGEST JOB

I don't think Iraola needs to abandon his football.

He needs to balance it.

The attacking ideas are there.

The aggression is there.

The quality is there.

The character is there.

But Liverpool have to become much better at controlling the moments when they DON'T have the ball.

That's where title-winning teams separate themselves.

🧠 MY FINAL VERDICT

Liverpool don't have a goalscoring problem.

They don't have a creativity problem.

They don't have an effort problem.

Liverpool currently have a CONTROL problem.

We can dominate possession and still be vulnerable.

We can score twice and still feel like we didn't control the match.

We can come back twice and still walk away disappointed with two points dropped.

And that's the biggest lesson from this game:

Liverpool have the quality to win games. Now they need to learn how to control them.

It's only the beginning of the season, so there is no reason to panic.

But there is plenty for Iraola to work on.

A game Liverpool should have won… but there are some serious lessons to take from this.

🔍 MY FULL-TIME ANALYSIS

🔴 1. Defensive transitions are still a BIG problem

Liverpool were too vulnerable whenever Forest broke forward. Ndoye's opener exposed the space Liverpool left behind, and the penalty for the second goal came from another situation where we lost control.

🔴 2. The reaction was good but the control wasn't

Credit to Liverpool for coming back twice. Isak's finish made it 1–1, and Muñoz produced a brilliant late equaliser. But constantly having to chase the game is not sustainable.

🔴 3. Isak finally gets his moment

Alexander Isak's goal is exactly what Liverpool needed from him — movement, positioning and a clinical finish. He needs consistent service because there is clearly a goalscorer in there.

🔴 4. VÍCTOR MUÑOZ — WHAT A MOMENT! 🔥

That equaliser was massive. A debut goal at Anfield when Liverpool desperately needed someone to step up.

He deserves serious credit.

🔴 5. Wirtz showed flashes

There were moments when Wirtz looked dangerous, but Liverpool still need to get him on the ball more consistently in the final third. His assist for Muñoz showed the quality he can bring.

🔴 6. The full-backs need more balance

Liverpool want to attack with their full-backs, but someone has to provide protection when they push forward. Forest repeatedly looked dangerous in the spaces Liverpool left.

🔴 7. Iraola still has work to do

Two league games. Two 2–2 draws.

There are positive signs in the attacking football, but defensively Liverpool still look too open and sometimes disconnected.

📊 THE BIGGEST TAKEAWAY

Liverpool have the quality to score goals. The bigger concern is controlling games.

We can't keep conceding first and relying on comebacks.

The talent is there.

The intensity is there.

But the balance isn't there yet.

Andoni Iraola has a lot to fix — especially defensively.

2–2. Two points dropped, but not a disaster.

Now we learn from it and improve. 🔴

What was Liverpool's biggest problem today? 👇

🔴 HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 0–1 NOTTINGHAM FOREST

🚨 NOT GOOD ENOUGH FROM LIVERPOOL.

Forest have punished us, and now the second half has to be completely different.

The biggest concern is not just the goal it’s how Liverpool are struggling to control the game.

🔴 WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE:

• More intensity the ball is moving too slowly.

• Midfield needs to step up involved we need control and quicker progression.

• Get Wirtz involved he needs to receive the ball in dangerous areas.

• Isak needs service we cannot leave our striker isolated.

• Stop giving Forest transition opportunities they are clearly comfortable attacking the spaces Liverpool leave behind.

• More movement off the ball standing and passing around Forest's block isn't going to break them down.

🔥 SECOND HALF = NO EXCUSES

Iraola needs to get a reaction immediately. If Liverpool don't improve in the opening 10–15 minutes, changes have to come.

We have 45 minutes to turn this around.

I don't expect Iraola to completely change the XI after just one Premier League game.

But I do expect a few tactical adjustments.

🧠 MIDFIELD:
Gravenberch and Szoboszlai could continue, but I expect them to be more disciplined. The biggest lesson from Newcastle was the space left when Liverpool lost possession.

⚡ RIGHT WING:
This is the position I'm watching most closely.

Rio Ngumoha could keep his place, but Víctor Muñoz has given Iraola something to think about after his excellent cameo against Newcastle.

🧱 DEFENCE:
I expect the same back four, but I want to see much better protection in front of Jacquet and Van Dijk.

🎯 WIRTZ:
I don't want Wirtz dropping too deep today. We need him closer to Isak, finding those pockets between midfield and defence.

🔥 ISAK:
This is the game where I want to see more from him.

He doesn't need to score immediately, but his movement, pressing and link-up play have to improve.

And one thing is certain…

🔴 More influence from Wirtz.

That's what I'll be watching.

It's the next test of whether Iraola's Liverpool are actually learning.

⚠️ Liverpool can be dangerous going forward, but we still need better balance.

⚠️ When the midfield pushes forward, someone has to protect the defence.

⚠️ Our transition defence has to improve.

⚠️ We cannot allow opponents to turn every lost ball into a dangerous counter-attack.

❤️ But there were positives too.

Liverpool showed character by coming from behind twice.

Víctor Muñoz gave us energy from the bench and won the penalty.

Gakpo looked dangerous.

Szoboszlai showed leadership when the pressure was at its highest.

And perhaps most importantly, the team never stopped fighting.

⚡ More movement around Isak.

🎯 Wirtz getting into positions where he can influence the game.

And above everything…

This is his first competitive game at Anfield.

The atmosphere will be different.

The pressure will be different.

And the expectation will be massive.

Forest have also shown that they cannot simply be taken lightly, so Liverpool need to start with intensity rather than waiting for the game to come to us.

I'm not expecting perfection.

I'm expecting improvement.

I'm expecting hunger.

I'm expecting the players to respond to what went wrong at Newcastle.

I've been thinking about Liverpool's 2–2 draw with Newcastle, and one thing keeps standing out to me.

Our midfield balance needs serious attention.

Liverpool have quality.

Wirtz can create.

Szoboszlai can run.

Gravenberch can carry the ball.

But who is consistently giving the team that defensive security?

Who sits in front of the defence when the full-backs push forward?

Who stops the counter-attacks?

Who wins those ugly midfield battles?

And most importantly…

WHO ALLOWS WIRTZ AND SZOBOSZLAI TO PLAY WITH FREEDOM?

This is why I understand Daniel Sturridge's argument that Liverpool need a natural defensive midfielder.

It's not about saying our current midfielders are bad.

It's about having the RIGHT PROFILE.

A proper No.6 could give Iraola's system something extremely important:

⚖️ 𝐁𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄.

Because Iraola wants Liverpool to press aggressively and attack with numbers.

That's exciting.

But aggressive football comes with a risk.

When you lose the ball, there has to be someone capable of stopping the opponent before they reach the back four.

Newcastle showed us what can happen when Liverpool's structure gets exposed.

And this is where I think the next transfer should be carefully considered.

Do we need another attacker?

Maybe.

But if I had to choose between adding another winger and signing a genuinely elite defensive midfielder…

Give Iraola that player and suddenly the whole team could look different.

Wirtz gets more freedom.

Szoboszlai can make those forward runs.

The full-backs can attack.

The centre-backs get more protection.

And Liverpool become harder to counter.

That's not a small improvement.
