*SATURDAY, AUGUST 29TH 2026.*

*THE TWENTY-FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR II.*

*THE MEMORIAL OF MARTYRDOM OF JOHN THE BAPTIST.*

*FIRST READING*
“God chose what is weak in the world.”

*A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians (1 CORINTHIANS 1: 26 - 31)*

Consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to the flesh, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth; but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong, God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no flesh might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption; therefore, as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord.”

*The Word of the Lord.*

*RESPONSORIAL PSALM*
Taken from Psalm 33: 12 - 13, 18 - 19, 20 - 21 (R.) 12b

And the response is;
*R/. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen as his heritage.*

Blessed the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people he has chosen as his heritage.
From the heavens the Lord looks forth;
he sees all the children of men. *R/.*

Yes, the Lord’s eyes are on those who fear him,
who hope in his merciful love,
to rescue their souls from death,
to keep them alive in famine. *R/.*

Our soul is waiting for the Lord.
He is our help and our shield.
In him do our hearts find joy.
We trust in his holy name. *R/.*

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION*
John 13: 34.

*Alleluia.*
A new commandment I give to you, says the Lord, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.
*Alleluia.*

*GOSPEL*
“I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

*A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (MARK 6: 17 - 29)*

At that time: Herod sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; because he had married her. For John said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he was much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of Galilee. For when Herodias’ daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will grant it.” And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.” And she went out, and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” And the king was exceedingly sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard of it, they came, took his; body, and laid it in a tomb.

*The Gospel of the Lord.*
