Event insight from rider writer David Moseley

Logistically, putting on an event like the go2sea is a puzzle wrapped inside a riddle wrapped inside a mystery wrapped inside a Nutella pancake.

In the beginning, the route needs to be mapped; this is something that needs to take riders from A to B every day, showing them some incredible sights, minimising unnecessary climbs, all while covering a fair bit of distance every day, but with the important caveat that riders finish with smiles and some enthusiasm to hit the local race village pub. In short, it needs to be something that keeps everyone happy - a near-impossible task. Yet they pull it off with aplomb.

To get the route into shape, Chief Planners Jani and Craig send out two hardy souls with heaps of mountain biking experience, gives them each a head torch and a bag of droewors, and asks them to come back to the office seven days later with a rideable route through rural Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. No problem.

Luckily for all riders here, Gary Green and Kemsley Wood - the 2025 Freedom Challenge winner - love nothing more than absconding from civilization and rooting around in the dirt for hours on end. So far, they’ve done an incredible job, taking participants on quiet Free State back roads, around KwaZulu-Natal bushveld trails and then, today, a scenic transition from bushveld to the dairy farms and pine plantations of the Midlands.

For foreign riders and South Africans alike, this is just the most incredible way to see the country. And cresting a hill with stark grassland surroundings one second and suddenly finding yourself in what feels like the middle of the English countryside is total scenery whiplash.

Getting local communities involved in the action is another key component of the event. Every water table is manned by schools, church groups, Rotarians, clubs or wildlife organisations. You end up with strangers force-feeding you toasted cheese and medium-rare rump steak on the edges of a pine plantation while a bagpiper skirls away in the background. It’s totally bonkers. And absolutely wonderful.

Words on races and riding, from our riding writing guy David Moseley

Mountain bike races are like cakes. Or onions. Or parfait. They have layers (sorry, my dog has made me watch Shrek too many times in the last few weeks). There are riders who love to roar from A to B and put their training to the test in a structured environment. This is very cool. Then you have the front of the middle, who strive to improve each day and move up the daily rankings. This is also cool.

Then you have the middle, the front of the back, and the back. These are the riders who either ran out of time to train (me), were just too busy watching World Cup football to train (also me), or still think they are 25 (me too!). They are also the riders who just love riding their bikes and having a good natter along the journey. That’s the beauty of stage races like the Old Mutual go2sea and the many others dotting the South African cycling landscape. There truly is something for everyone.

I tried racing once. It was terrible. I trained for a few months with coach to the stars Mike Posthumous. Then I entered a stage race with type-A rider, and we ended up finishing just outside the top 20. It was awful (I mean, Mike is a sweetheart; he wasn’t awful. Nor was the training, actually. But the racing was horrible). I’ve realised I much prefer dawdling along and chatting to random strangers - even if they don’t want to talk back.

Just ask my mate Barry, who I found riding all alone a few years back on a long joberg2c day and chitty-chatted with him all the way to the finish. When I suggested we ride together again the next day, he offered a blunt “no thanks”.

Undeterred, I’ve kept it with other victims, er, riders. And it’s great. This week I’ve met Steve, a kilt-shop owner, bagpipe player and Freedom Challenge finisher. I’ve chatted to Mandy from the Cape. I’ve enquired about the hardtails that technically gifted Bryony and Danielle from the UK have been riding. And of course, I’ve kept up a constant commentary in Gerald’s ear for three days - no wonder then that he left me for dead on the singletrack climbs and descents today!
