Why do we treat your neck when you’ve come to us for your jaw?
The position and movement of the joints in your neck can directly influence the position of your jaw joint, known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Because these areas are closely connected, problems in the neck can affect how the jaw moves and functions.
The neck and jaw share nerve pathways through the trigeminocervical centre, which means pain or dysfunction in the neck can contribute to jaw pain. This close neurological connection is one reason why treating the neck can sometimes help reduce TMJ symptoms.
Research has shown that gentle neck mobilisation techniques can improve jaw pain and even increase how far the mouth can open. Addressing neck stiffness or restricted movement is often an important part of managing temporomandibular disorders.
