Healthy Habits: Recovery for the Active Person
Train hard. Recover harder. π§ββοΈποΈββοΈ
If CrossFit is part of your lifestyle, recovery is what allows you to keep showing up, performing well and reducing your risk of burnout and injury.
Here are 6 healthy recovery habits worth prioritising:
π΄ Sleep β your biggest recovery tool
Aim for consistent, quality sleep. This is when your body repairs tissue, supports your immune system and helps regulate hormones and performance. Donβt underestimate the power of a good nightβs sleep.
π₯ Nutrition β fuel the recovery
Recovery starts with what you put on your plate. Prioritise enough protein, carbohydrates to replenish glycogen, healthy fats, fruit and vegetables β and donβt forget hydration and electrolytes when appropriate.
π₯βοΈ Heat & cold β tools, not magic
Sauna, warm showers, baths and cold exposure can be useful additions to your recovery routine. But they shouldnβt replace sleep, nutrition and appropriate training load. Think of them as supporting tools, rather than shortcuts.
πΆ Active recovery β keep moving
Recovery doesnβt always mean lying on the couch. A gentle walk, easy cycle, swim or low-intensity session can help you stay mobile and get some movement without adding significant training stress.
π€Έ Mobility β move well, move often
Spend a few minutes working on the areas that need attention: ankles, hips, thoracic spine, shoulders and whatever your individual training demands. Consistency beats doing one huge mobility session once a week.
π Soft tissue work β release & restore
Massage, foam rolling, lacrosse balls and other soft-tissue techniques can feel great and may help with short-term soreness and mobility. Use them to complement your recovery β not as a substitute for addressing training load, technique or movement limitations.
The takeaway
Recovery isnβt one thing. Itβs a collection of daily habits.
Sleep well.
Eat enough.
Hydrate.
Move.
Work on mobility.
Use heat, cold and soft-tissue work strategically.
Your best training sessions are built on what you do between them. πͺ
