y ill adults who have been diagnosed with Bipolar and Schizophrenia. Our residents seek refuge in our home because their families do not understand their illness and have no idea how to deal with the changes that they go through, and some don’t have any family at all. The home relies on monthly bed subsidies paid by the Department of Health and our residents live off monthly disability grants paid by SASSA (South African Social Security Services). Our home is situated in Witpoortjie, Roodepoort in South Africa and takes care of 23 permanent functional adults, who live independently of supervision and 5 day residents. Our home promotes harmony, tranquillity and serenity within our residents, who regard each other as one big family. Our Primary Aim:
To help severe psychiatric adults previously institutionalized to feel worthy and help them deal with their illness. We are here to uplift, care, love, and assist our residents in all ways so that they can be somewhat rehabilitated and integrated back into the workplace if they feel ready to do so. Funding:
Our home, being a non-profit organization, relies on monthly bed subsidies paid by the Department of Health, together with the continual rising of the cost of living, the home finds it more and more difficult to ensure its survival. To protect the home from closing down, we have put together a fundraising event known as the Bell of Hope Cycle Challenge for Mental Wellness. This is a road cycle challenge through the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. The first one being in 2013, entries doubled those expected, in 2014 the entries doubled again, and for this year, we are hoping for a 1000+ entries. The more popular this event becomes, the more funds will be raised to ensure the survival of the home for a very long time. The thought of our home closing down and the residents having nowhere to go is just heart breaking, and very difficult to live with weighing heavily on our conscience.
