The countryโs Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Dr Mirriam Matandela, says the nursing policies' directions in nursing need constant review so that they are able to talk to the needs of the communities in the country.
She was delivering the message of support at the DENOSA Women's Month celebration at Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in Bloemfontein, Free State.
Responding to the MEC of Health, Monyatso Mahlatsi, on the challenges his province is faced with, such as the shortage of skilled and specialists in psychiatric nursing, Dr Matandela said there is a need for the gatherimg of heads by the nursing fraternity on the need to produce specialist nurses at diploma level.
She encouraged women nurses to groom amd develop themselves and aspire for growth.
She paid tribute to the nurses who have fallen victims to abuse while in the workplace, and said there is a greater need to protect them at political level too, as some 24-hour service centres.
She called on the nurses to protect each other and say "No". She called on women to also support each other instead of destroying each other in the workplace.

The MEC of Health in Free State, Monyatso Mahlatsi, has lambasted the countryโs regulatory authority for nursing, SANC, for terminating the four-year R425 Nursing Course, saying its termination was an illadvised decision as it has since caused huge disruptions to the countryโs healthcare system as shortages in various nursing areas is becoming glaring in healthcare facilities.
He was addressing the DENOSA Women's Month celebration at Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in Bloemfontein, Free State.
He undertook to engage the SANC over the matter.
MEC Mahlatsi is the second MEC to publicly criticize the termination of the R425, following the similar unhappiness that was expressed by Gauteng MEC of Health in Gauteng, Faith Mazibuko, as the DENOSA event in May this year.
MEC Mahlatsi has appreciated women for their leadership, and apologized for the manner in which they are treated by many men, saying it is time men did better.
