RFS Econorun

Unfortunately the RFS Bike Econorun is longer on the calender. The only event in the world with a willing sponsor is without participants. The old farts do not ride their motorbikes anymore and the young farts do not appreciate the competive fun of riding a bike at selected (but fast) controlled speed.

So sorry that we had to cancel this serious but fun event after 37 straight years as a result of not enough entries. Next year? Let me know who will commit as we have to pan accommodation, route, permissions from SAP etc well in advance. [email protected]

Die 2018 RFS Auto Motorfietsbesparingsrit gaan hierdie jaar ook vir motors toeganklik wees!

Die sukses van die RFS Motorfietsbesparingsrit oor die afgelope 37 jaar het veroorsaak dat daar meer en meer motor-entoesiaste is wat versoek het dat die organiseerders ook motors in die byeenkoms moet toelaat.

Indien alles goed verloop en daar genoeg belangstelling is gaan motors ook hierdie jaar tydens die 38ste byeenkoms wat op 24/25 Augustus 2018 deur Pretoria Motorklub gereël word, deelneem.

Daar sal soos gewoonlik ongeveer 50 motorfietsjaers wees wat hul vermoeëns om so min moontlik brandstof te gebruik, teen mekaar opweeg. Die organiseerders het besluit om ‘n beperkte aantal standaard passasiers voertuie - petrol en diesel aangedrewe hierby toe te laat.

Die motorfietse sal soos gebruiklik in hul verskillende klasse meeding, terwyl die inskrywings vir motors nie direk teen mekaar gaan meeding nie, maar eerder teen hulself - of dan liewer poog om brandstofverbruiksyfers waarop die vervaardigers aanspraak maak, te bewys of te verbeter.

Privaat - sowel as inskrywings van vervaardigers en handellaars sal aanvaar word.

Dit gaan uit die aard van die saak in die vervaardigers se belang wees om voertuie in te skryf wat onder gekontrolleerde omstandighede deelneem en sodoende te kan bewys wat hul produk se brandstofverbruik werklik is.

Alhoewel daar ‘n paar fyner reëls vir motorvoertuie neergelê sal word, is die belangrikste dat die voertuig, ongeag die jaar van vervaardiging, absoluut standaard moet wees. Geen fieterjasies wat branstofverbruik sal beinvloed, wat nie standaard op,die voertuig is, sal toegelaat word nie.

Indien daar ‘n groot genoeg aanvraag deur byvoorbeeld vervaardigers en installeerders van rekenaar skyfies (chips) is om deel te neem, sal dié deelname in ‘n spesiale klas geskied. Die publiek sal dan ook kan sien of hierdie veranderings werklik die moeite werd is, wat brandstofverbruik betref,

Die RFS Auto Brandstofbesparingsrit sal hierdie jaar op 24/25 Augustus plaasvind en die roete gaan van die nuwe Rallystar Motorsport Akademie by die Sun Carousel buite Pretoria begin en sal weer soos ‘n paar keer in die verlede by die Numbi Hotel op Hazeyview eindig.

Hierdie uiters gewilde byeenkoms sal met die toevoeging van motors selfs meer gewild onder die hele gesin wees en word vir die 12 de agtereenvolgende jaar deur RFS AUTO geborg.

THE 2018 RFS AUTO BIKE ECONORUN - A NEW LOOK

Very few events in any form of motorsport still caters for social, let alone family fun, while it still serves an important purpose - such as testing of fuel economy.

The RFS AUTO BIKE ECONORUN stands out as one such event and this year the organisers will take the concept one step further, when they allow a limited number of passenger cars to enter the event as well.

There is however a clever twitch to the car section of the event - the drivers will compete against themselves and not against the opposition in the other vehicles.

Event organisers, Francois Jordaan, explains: “The idea is to “test” the manufacturer’s claim made about the fuel consumption of a car and if this is really achievable under normal travelling circumstances. You have to remember that this is not simply a test where drivers can drive at low speeds. The route has been plotted over a certain distance and drivers are allowed a time to complete the distance. The average speed will be well in the speed limit but drivers can coast along and still make the time over every section. They are also not allowed to “freewheel” along, even though that gets more difficult with the modern gearboxes.

The consumption figures will be controlled by placing an observer in every car and sealing fuel tanks. The figures achieved will be certified by the PMC (Pretoria Motor Club) organisers and the manufacturers will be allowed to use those figures in their marketing campaigns.”

This should be fun for competitors who would like to enjoy one of the best social weekends of the year and at the same time see what it is like to drive as lightfoot as possible, instead of stretching necks and popping eyes to see where the next speedtrap is situated.

Entries for cars will be limited to 20 and the organiser will if necessary, retain the right to select entries to be representative of cars on South African roads.

It will be in the interest of manufacturers to enter cars with drivers who will do their best to drive economically - to ensure that they get genuine and credible consumption figures.

Although there will be some finer rules, the major rule will be that cars, irrespective of year model and make, will have to comply with the standard factory specifications as claimed by the manufacturer. No performance changes will be allowed, except if there are enough entries with for instance “unichips” fitted, to make the competition worthwhile and offer an opportunity to the performance centres to prove better consumption.

The biker side of things will obviously remain as it was over the past 37 years and the riders will again compete in a wide variety of classes to make the RFS Auto Bike Econorun as interesting and exciting as always.

The 2018 RFS AUTO BIKE ECONORUN will start on 24th August 2018 at the Rallystar Motorsport Academy at the Sun Carousel next to the N1 50 kms north of Pretoria and end on the 25th at the well-known Numbi Hotel in Hazyview Mpumalanga.

This ever popular event will be sponsored for the 12th year in succession by the RFS Group.
