A SPECIAL GLIMPSE INTO THE RED-KNOBBED COOTS ON FIREFLY LAKE

These photos were taken on Firefly Lake over a period of about 6-8 weeks I first noticed they were building a nest mid April

The Red-knobbed Coot is a charismatic waterbird easily identified by its all-black feathers, stark white beak, and the two bright red k***s on its forehead. They occurs on all the dams in Silverlake’s

The pairs are strictly monogamous and perform courtship dances where they offer food to each other.

Pairs build large, floating nests out of aquatic plants, reeds, and grasses in shallow water. Both the male and female work together to build the nest.

The female lays a clutch of 5 to 7 lightly speckled olive eggs. Both parents take turns keeping the eggs warm for about 18 to 25 days.

The first three classes of our kids holiday program was a great success, there are only 2 classes left, book your spot and don't miss out!

We are excited to invite our young Silver Lakes residents, BETWEEN THE AGES 6 AND 13, to join us for a fun and creative Holiday Art Program during the school holidays.

This is a wonderful opportunity for children to stay busy, explore their creativity and enjoy a relaxed, hands-on art experience with friends. Children may attend one class or join us for all the sessions.
Each class costs R200 per child and will take place from 10:00 to 12:00 on the selected dates.

KIDS HOLIDAY ART PROGRAM

We are so excited to have Corlia Fouché and Heimeri Botes from Corlia Fouché Art leading the creative art classes for our young artists.
We have been overwhelmed by the incredible response to the holiday art programme and by the wonderful number of children who enrolled. Seeing how much they are enjoying every moment has been truly rewarding.
Last week, the children explored the art of printing, and yesterday they created and painted their own unique masks. Their creativity has been amazing to watch! Each child brought their own ideas, imagination and personality to their artwork, resulting in a beautiful variety of colourful and expressive masks.

This holiday programme has truly been a great success, and we hope every child continues to enjoy this creative journey with us.

There are still three exciting classes coming up, so be sure to book your child’s spot in time to avoid missing out on the creative fun!
