# The 5 Laws of the Golf Swing – Why Every Golfer Is Different
One of the biggest misconceptions in golf is that everyone should swing the club the same way. In reality, there are many different-looking golf swings, but they all have one thing in common—they deliver the club correctly at impact.
As a coach, I don't teach golfers to copy a Tour player's swing. Instead, I look at the **five laws of the golf swing** that determine how the ball will fly.
**1. Clubface Control** – The clubface has the biggest influence on where the ball starts and how it curves.
**2. Club Path** – The direction the club travels through impact works together with the clubface to produce draws, fades, or straight shots.
**3. Centred Contact** – Striking the middle of the clubface produces maximum distance, better feel, and greater consistency.
**4. Low Point Control** – With irons, the club should reach the bottom of its arc after the ball. Good low-point control leads to crisp, solid contact.
**5. Speed** – Speed creates distance, but only when the first four laws are working together efficiently.
So why can some people pick up golf naturally while others need lessons?
Some golfers have natural athletic ability, good balance, coordination, and body awareness. Through trial and error, they instinctively learn movements that satisfy these five laws without understanding the technical side of the game.
Others may have limited mobility, poor balance, previous sporting habits, or movement patterns that make it much harder to achieve these positions naturally. That's where coaching makes the difference.
A good coach doesn't simply change your swing—they identify which of the five laws is preventing you from playing your best golf and help you find a movement that works for **your** body.
One of the biggest keys to achieving this is **proper weight shift and hip movement**. The hips are the engine of the golf swing. They help create power, improve balance, shallow the club, control the low point, and allow the arms and club to move efficiently through impact. When the body moves correctly, many swing faults begin to correct themselves naturally.
At the end of the day, golf isn't about having the perfect-looking swing. It's about delivering the club consistently at impact. Every golfer is different, and that's exactly why every lesson should be tailored to the individual—not to a model swing.
