DASO Nelson Mandela University DASO is the Democratic Alliance Students Organisation.

DASO is an ancillary organisation of the Democratic Alliance (DA) based on a tertiary campus, and therefore in itself subscribes to the vision, mission, and strategies of the DA however with its own unique focus. We, the students of the Democratic Alliance Students Organisation, rooted in the values of constitutional liberal democracy, believe that education is the cornerstone of the liberation of all South African students and the catalyst for the full realisation of the rights and freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution (1996). We further believe that intellectual independence and open debate are vital to the preservation of a healthy democracy. We advocate the enrichment of the whole individual – intellectual, personal, cultural and physical – at institutions of tertiary education, through the development of academic, social, cultural and sporting facilities. We therefore commit ourselves to the protection and promotion of an open and free educational environment based on academic freedom, equality of opportunity and respect for individual worth.

Today we hosted a Coffee and Sandwich Drive at Vella SA and Cotton House. The programme continued at PSA 16 and 18 on Jetty with Games Night and the Meal-a-Day Drive.

Dear Madibaz,

Today, DASO conducted a successful Sandwich Drive at Second Avenue Campus where students came in numbers to support the initiative.

As part of our ongoing initiative to combat student food insecurity on campus, our dedicated members prepared and distributed fresh sandwiches to students which is an effort aims to ensure that no student has to sit through lectures distracted by food insecurity, enabling them to actively participate, focus, and succeed in their academic journey.

We remain committed to practical student support and creating a campus where every student can thrive.

RE: Meal a Day and Pads drive distribution

Greetings Madibaz,

This evening we continued with our Meal a Day Drive at Yolanda Guma, provided over 250 warm meals to our students.We also visited Charlotte Maxeke where sanitary towels were distributed to support the dignity and wellbeing of our students.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the House Committees and students who have taken it upon themselves to start similar initiatives within their own residences. Every month they cook for fellow students and assist those in need with toiletries. Their spirit of Ubuntu remind us that true leadership begins with caring for one another.

These acts may appear simple, but they mean everything to a student who is hungry or cannot afford basic necessities. The initiative will continue across different student accommodation.

Spring is here. 🌿

And after a long winter, we deserve a moment to breathe, come together, laugh, and simply enjoy being Madibaz.

Last week at R Lounge, we showed what happens when we come together — the energy was unmatched, the memories were made, and the spirit of togetherness was alive.

Today, we do it again. ✊🏾

Kings Accommodation is calling. We are inviting our female students as we close the Women’s month to gather, bring the good energy, and welcome the new season the right way — with good company and good vibes.🧀🍷

And please, DON’T FORGET YOUR PILLOW AND FLEECE😭😂 We’re welcoming spring, but we’re not pretending Port Elizabeth suddenly has warm weather.

Dear Madibaz,

DASO is pleased to announce that our recent Pyjama Night held at The R-Lounge was a resounding success.

With students turning out in impressive numbers, filling the venue with positive energy and great vibes as they celebrated in comfortable pyjama attire.

The atmosphere was lively, inclusive and enjoyable, with attendees fully embracing the spirit of the evening.

Also the DASO team worked diligently throughout the night to ensure that every student in attendance was able to return home safely. We prioritised the wellbeing and security of all participants, reflecting our ongoing commitment to responsible student leadership.

Whether you knew him for many years or crossed paths with him for only a moment, your presence will be highly appreciated by the family during this time of remembrance.
