“So why do you like riding youngsters?”
Hmm… I’ve never really thought about it.
Maybe it’s the feeling of sitting on raw talent and imagining what that horse could become. Maybe it’s watching the progress over weeks, months, and years. Seeing all the little pieces come together until one day you realise you’ve created something special.
Maybe it’s the pride of winning a title on a horse you’ve produced yourself.
I also think Thoroughbreds are so often overlooked these days. Everything seems to be about Warmbloods, but give me a Thoroughbred with a willing heart any day.
I’ve never had the privilege of riding a made horse or a schoolmaster, and perhaps that’s exactly why I love the challenge. Growing up, we all rode young or novice horses. We didn’t buy experience—we created it. We put in the hours, made the mistakes, celebrated the small wins, and learned together.
For me, there really is nothing more rewarding than watching a youngster grow into the horse you always believed they could be.
