Avoiding the discomfort of a child's protest in the short term skipping the correction, dodging the hard conversation, letting things slide to keep the peace tends to produce a much larger, much later grief for the parent who chose comfort over guidance. What isn't addressed in the crying stage returns, eventually, at a size that makes the parent do the crying instead.
