🌟 Building Your Dog’s Tracking Journey 🌟
Hey everyone, Trainer Rika here with some of my “Trail Tips” !
When it comes to training a scene‑specific or tracking dog, the answer is always yes—every dog has that incredible potential!
But before we jump straight into the super-sleuthing work, there’s a journey we get to take together.
Training a tracking or trailing dog starts with the basics:
- building a strong bond,
- mastering obedience, and
- ensuring those lead and harness manners are on point.
Think of it as laying a solid foundation before we build the house.
So when you reach out and ask,
“Can you help my dog learn to track?” the answer is absolutely yes!
We just take the journey step‑by‑step, focusing on trust, consistency, and those essential building blocks.
Before you know it, your dog will be ready for the exciting world of scent work!
Happy training.
The Unleashed Lowveld Team,
Building a brighter future for dogs in the human world.

🐾 Beware of the Half-Baked Puppy. 🐾
Thinking of getting a puppy? Read this before you buy!
If a breeder is pawning off pups at 5–8 weeks, it’s not because they’re “ready.” It’s because they’re most likely dodging vet bills, vaccination costs and food costs or they just don't know of better. And you’re left with a half-baked puppy—socially unfinished, behaviorally raw, and headed straight for trouble.
📅 Puppy Development Timeline
Week 8: Puppies are just starting to explore the world. They’re still learning bite inhibition and social cues from mom and littermates.
Week 9–10: Critical lessons in manners, bite control, and confidence. This is when mom teaches them how hard is too hard.
Week 11–12: Independence blossoms, personalities emerge, and pups are finally ready to transition into human homes with a solid foundation.
🦴 Why Bite Inhibition Matters
Skip this phase, and you skip bite inhibition. That means your pup grows up thinking teeth are toys. Trainers like me end up with your “problem dog” biting hands, clothes, and kids—and you’re left wondering why. Spoiler: no human can teach bite control like a stable mom can.
✅ Ethical Breeders
Ethical breeders keep pups with their mothers until at least 10–12 weeks. They invest in vaccinations, vet care, and proper socialization. They don’t rush puppies out the door to save a buck.
🚫 Don’t Buy Into the Half-Baked Puppy Syndrome
Next time you see an advert for pups “ready at 5 or 6 weeks,” remember: that’s not readiness, that’s recklessness. Take one to know one—and trust the trainers, behaviorists, and mentors who deal with the fallout every day.
Keep pups with mom longer. Save yourself the ouch. Save your trainer the headache. Raise a dog the ethical way.

Rika Venter Sassy-Soaked Training Tip of the Day 💁♀️
🌟 March – Muzzle – Magic 🌟
I am muzzle trained.
Not because I’m out here plotting chaos…
But because life is messy.
And sometimes my inner gremlin wakes up before my manners do.
Pain happens.
Fear happens.
Change happens.
-And don’t even get me started on squirrels, those tiny park ninjas.
So when my brain decides to take a quick lunch break in the middle of a stressful moment, my muzzle jumps in like the responsible friend in every group:
“Sweetie, I love you… but no.”
A muzzle isn’t a punishment.
It isn’t an insult.
It’s - the dog version of putting on a bra, no a seat belt, - Not always needed, but always necessary when needed.
Smart dog owners don’t wait for drama.
They don’t cross their fingers and hope for the best.
They plan ahead, like the strategic geniuses they are.
Because nothing says “I adore my dog” like preventing them from making a questionable life choice that lands us on a community WhatsApp group. 💕
A muzzle doesn’t mean a dog is dangerous.
It means someone cared enough to be prepared.
Which, honestly, Is giving main-character energy. 🥇
-- And Yes, you need to Train your dog to wear this Awsome accessory-- Magic only happens when the time is put in.

We get phone calls daily asking us to take in dogs, train them, and then return them to the sender, sorry I mean the owner. We also receive phone calls from owners who have done this🔝 and now have no control of their own dogs… 🤔
So we have decided to put an info post together. And as Rika always says: Read it, use it, lose it, or make jam with it.
-Why Outboarding K9 Training Will Never Give You a Holistic Home Environment.
Sending your dog away for training might sound convenient, but here’s the truth: a “working pet” is not built in isolation, it’s built in your home, with you.
Here’s why outboarding falls short:
No bond with you: Dogs may obey the trainer, but they don’t learn to trust you.
Wrong environment: Training facilities don’t have doorbells, kids, visitors, or the daily rhythms of your household.
Lost consistency:If you weren’t part of the process, you won’t know the cues or corrections, leaving your dog confused.
Holistic balance requires integration: A true working pet thrives when training is woven into family routines, respect, and communication.
Training isn’t a product you outsource, it’s a relationship you build.
For a dog to be both a companion and a partner in your household, you must be part of the journey.
At Unleashed Lowveld, we empower owners and dogs together, ensuring skills transfer seamlessly into everyday life.
Because a “normal” home environment isn’t about commands, it’s about connection.
