The nyala is where nature draws a bold line between the sexes. Cows are smaller, reddish and striped. Bulls? Much bigger, darker, and sporting spiraled horns and shaggy coats.
This is the first species where the difference is so striking, they were once thought to be two separate animals.
🌿 Diet: Leaves, fruits, and twigs — mostly browsers

👶 Gestation: About 7 months

⚖️ Fun Fact: The nyala is the first antelope species with extreme sexual dimorphism — bulls and cows look nothing alike

👥 Herds: 4–10, usually females and young, while bulls are often alone

Wildlife Wednesday: Blesbok vs. Bontebok 🦌🔍

You’ve seen the bontebok — now meet its lighter-coated cousin, the blesbok.

They share almost everything: size, shape, grazing habits, and even that bold white blaze. But look closely — blesbok tend to have paler coats and slightly less contrast in their facial markings.

🌿 Diet: Grazers of short grasses across open plains

👶 Gestation: Around 8 months

🎨 Fun Fact: Their name comes from the Afrikaans word bles, meaning blaze — referring to the bright white mark on their faces

👥 Herd Size: 10–30, often seen in large, active groups

Wildlife Wednesday: The Bontebok Bounce-Back 🦌🌾

With their rich chestnut coats, bold white blazes, and graceful stride, bontebok are easy on the eyes — but easy to mix up, too. They’re closely related to the blesbok, who you’ll meet in next week’s post!

🌿 Diet: Short grasses — they’re selective grazers found on open plains

👶 Gestation: About 8 months

📉 Fun Fact: Once nearly extinct with fewer than 20 left in the wild, bontebok numbers have made a major comeback thanks to conservation

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Herds: 6–25, mostly females and young, with territorial males or bachelor groups

Bontebok are often confused with their cousin, the blesbok — but at Sparta, they’re kept in separate camps to prevent interbreeding. Look for the darker coat, purer white rump, and bold white blaze.

Meet the eland — the largest antelope in Africa, yet one of the gentlest. Weighing in at nearly a ton, these bushveld giants move with surprising grace and agility.

At Sparta, they’re often spotted in the early hours, peacefully grazing in open grasslands. Their spiral horns, shaggy dewlaps, and quiet strength make them unforgettable.

Most people expect giraffe, zebra, and wildlife on a horseback safari.

Looking back through these photos and it’s hard to believe this was only a few days ago.

What started as a group of strangers quickly became a group of friends sharing one incredible adventure together.

Ten days filled with horses, wildlife, African sunsets, polo, cattle herding, great food, endless laughs, and memories we’ll be talking about for years.

The photos are beautiful, but they’ll never quite capture what it felt like to be there.

We’re already missing this group.
