Art vs. Big Business: FIFA’s Dallas Whale Mural Drama Heads to Court
An iconic piece of public art in downtown Dallas has become the latest casualty of World Cup prep — and it’s sparking a major legal fight. Artist Robert Wyland’s “Whaling Wall 82” (aka “Ocean Life”), a massive 1999 mural featuring life-sized whales and dolphins, stood proudly for nearly 30 years as a landmark promoting ocean conservation. In mid-May 2026, it was largely painted over in blue — without Wyland’s knowledge or consent — to make way for World Cup promotional artwork ahead of Dallas hosting nine matches, including a semifinal.
Now, Wyland is fighting back. He filed a federal lawsuit on June 2 against FIFA and the building owners, seeking at least $25 million for alleged violation of the Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA), which protects recognized artworks from intentional destruction or mutilation.
FIFA’s response? They claim no involvement and are pointing fingers at the local host city committee
