Sometimes a single lesson, taught quietly in a pool on an ordinary weekday, becomes something much bigger when life tests it in the real world.

When heavy rains caused the Jukskei River to swell last week, a young learner from Alexandra, Lesetja Mokonyama, accidentally fell into the fast-moving water.

What followed could have easily turned into a tragedy. Instead, it became a powerful example of how basic water safety education can save lives.

Lesetja had been attending weekly sessions at the Alexandra Youth Swim Academy, a programme hosted at King David High School, where learners are taught not only how to swim, but how to survive in emergencies.

In that moment, he didn’t fight the water or panic. He went back to what he had been taught: stay calm, focus on breathing, and use controlled movements to keep afloat. He relied on simple survival techniques like steady breathing and blowing bubbles to stay composed while working his way toward the riverbank, where patrollers were able to reach him safely.
