A Cold End to a Hot Season
In the final match of the season, Marks Park A faced familiar but friendly foes in their own B team. The teams may have been friendly, but the weather certainly wasn’t. It was a cold, blustery afternoon – the sort of day when most sensible people would rather be under a blanket on the couch in front of the TV than chasing a tennis ball around a frozen court.
The A team justified their selection with a convincing 5–1 victory, with the only loss coming in a deciding third-set tiebreak. Full credit to Rosanda for her grit, determination and BMT in some seriously challenging conditions.
Once the tennis was finally over, both teams sensibly abandoned the cold and huddled indoors for refreshments and a well-earned drink. This week, tea and coffee were very much the beverages of choice, dramatically reversing the usual league trend where cool refreshments tend to be the clear winners.
If league positions were decided on commitment rather than points, the A team would have walked away with the title. They were the only team in Bundes – men’s or ladies’ – to field the same four players every single week! Third place, however, and their best finish in several years, is still a considerable feather in the cap. A strong season, a committed squad and, mercifully, a final match that came with indoor refreshments.

The Final!
It was cold, windy, and absolutely not the weather anyone ordered for a tennis final!
James got the day rolling with a proper comeback story — going a set down before digging deep and fighting his way to a 3-set victory. Lloyd was next into battle and left absolutely everything on the court, but after another marathon 3-set war, Randburg managed to sneak the win. Uys played some great tennis and, in what was becoming the theme of the day, was also dragged into a 3-set battle before eventually going down. Rishay faced a tough opponent and couldn’t quite find the finish line, leaving Marks Park needing a doubles miracle.
We needed to win both doubles in straight sets to take the title. Our couples came out firing, taking the first sets and giving us hope...Then tennis happened! Both matches turned into massive battles, both went to three sets, and unfortunately Randburg took both — and with it, the trophy.
A heartbreaking finish, but an incredible effort from the whole team. So close, great tennis, and plenty to be proud of!

MEN’S SUNDAY LEAGUE
Unfortunately, the bad weather on Saturday worsened on Sunday, so the Men’s B, C and D team fixtures were postponed. All three matches will be played away since the Master’s Interprovincial Tournament is being played at Marks Park. The B team will take on Bryanston CCA, the C team will play River Ridge B, and the D team will face Morningside CCA. Here’s hoping the weather plays ball!
