A crystal clear ocean greeted us on Sunday and Monday's sea kayak tours from Hermanus Old Harbour. Great times spent kayaking inside Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary. 🛶

The water was so clear I could see the kelp forest swaying below, a seal popped up close to the kayak, the whole bay was glowing, misty, mystical, beautiful, almost unreal✨️🪼😍🙌🏽 THEN 🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬 a whole school of dolphins swam past us! So close I could hear them splash, feel their energy, and their highpictched sounds vibrating through the air. HOW amazing! 😍😍 I've been out with @walkerbay_adventures_ quiet a few times now since making Hermanus my home - birthday paddles, during whale season, on calm mornings, and it has never once disappointed. Today was a beautiful day for sea kayaking here in Hermanus. Sea kayaking from Hermanus Old Harbour inside Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary on a beautiful winters day is always special. 🛶☀️🦭🐧🐋

A giant piece of blubber with throat grooves was seen floating in the ocean while out kayaking this morning from Hermanus Old Harbour. The blubber is very likely from the deceased Fin Whale that washed up on the beach in Walker Bay Nature Reserve recently. Pieces of blubber was cut of during the necroscopy on the Fin whale.

The throat grooves extend from the lower jaw all the way down to the navel. They are incredibly elastic and allow the whale to balloon out its throat like a parachute, enabling it to engulf massive volumes of water and schooling fish or krill during "lunge feeding".

The blubber can currently be seen floating in the Old Harbour mouth if you look down from above.
