A few of you commented on the previous .375 post that the silencer must be doing most of the work.

The silencer definitely helps — no argument there.
But the stock design plays the bigger role.

We just received a video from my good friend Fanie shooting his .500 Jeffery with a Musgrave stock.
Anyone who has ever fired a .500 Jeff will tell you it is one of the hardest recoiling rifles you can put to your shoulder.

Normally the muzzle ends up at about 45 degrees.
Your cheek gets a hard slap.
The trigger guard tries to imprint itself into your middle finger.
If you’re not careful, your thumb comes back and gives you a solid klap on the nose, followed by that unpleasant metallic taste.
A few choice words usually follow, together with a couple of seconds of brain fog.

That is the reality of most .458 Lott and bigger rifles.

Understanding Recoil Management on Hunting Rifles

Recoil is one of the most misunderstood parts of rifle shooting. Many people think it is only about the cartridge or the weight of the rifle. In reality, the shape and geometry of the stock play a much bigger role than most realise.

We recently fitted a Musgrave stock to a .375 CZ 550 and took it for a field test. The difference in how the rifle behaved under recoil was immediately noticeable — less muzzle rise and a quicker recovery onto the target.

The key factors are:
- The alignment of the bore axis with the shooter’s shoulder
- A grip design that prevents the hand from slipping under recoil
- A broader butt that spreads the force more evenly

These design elements reduce the rotational force that causes the barrel to jump, which is why the shooter can stay on the animal and see the impact more clearly.
