UPDATE TO SOUTH AFRICA WATER POLO MEMBERSHIP POLICY

Following consultation across the SAWP regional leadership structures, the implementation of the SAWP membership policy has been reviewed and refined.

Gauteng Water Polo, as part of this united SAWP structure, remains committed to building a stronger future for South African Water Polo — one based on strong values, transparent governance, proper administration and, most importantly, growing participation, developing players and strengthening the clubs and leagues that form the foundation of our sport.

The revised position is:

* *Regional leagues until 31 December 2026:* Players may continue playing in their existing regional leagues for the remainder of 2026, including players who have participated in SSA structures. This transition period allows provinces to complete their current competitions without disrupting teams or unnecessarily penalising players.

* *SAWP tournaments and High Performance:* The current SAWP eligibility requirements remain in place for the Gauteng Invitational, Cape Town Invitational, Winter Series and the SAWP High Performance pathway. Players who choose to participate in SSA structures will not be eligible for these SAWP programmes.

* *From 1 January 2027:* To play in a SAWP provincial league, a player must be a registered SAWP member, belong to and meet the obligations of their club and provincial league, pay the required membership and affiliation fees, and comply with the SAWP membership policy. A player who chooses to affiliate with or participate in SSA structures will no longer meet the conditions of SAWP membership and will therefore not be eligible to participate in SAWP-affiliated leagues or programmes.

Things Water Polo Teaches You That No Textbook Can. 🤽‍♀️🤽‍♂️

Water polo is about so much more than what happens during a game. Along the way, players develop communication, resilience, teamwork, decision-making, accountability, discipline and confidence.

These are skills that grow through experience, challenge and being part of a team — and they stay with our athletes long after they leave the pool.

Because the lessons of sport extend far beyond the scoreboard.

Today we celebrate the incredible women who make our water polo community stronger, more connected and more inspiring every day.

To our players, mothers, coaches, referees, team managers, administrators, volunteers, officials, club leaders, teachers and supporters — thank you for the time, passion, dedication and energy you give to our sport.

To the women who play, coach, lead, organise, officiate, encourage and empower, your contribution matters. You are helping create opportunities for the next generation and shaping the future of water polo in Gauteng.

Today, we celebrate every woman behind the game, beside the game and in the game.

Dear Gauteng Water Polo community

Gauteng Water Polo is aware of the email sent by SAWP today, 3 August see below.

Gauteng Water Polo members voted to affiliate with SAWP at the AGM on 22 July. The new management is in the process of finalising the new constitution which will reflect this vote.

To this end we will engage with SAWP to establish which players will be affected by the ban and communicate with them. We will also clarify the implementation of this ruling and how it will be administered within Gauteng, so that the best interests of the players and the sport is upheld.
