⚠️ Compliance Alert: Fi****ms in Deceased Estates ⚠️

SAGA has issued an important reminder to firearm-owning families following reports of SAPS members in the Western Cape contacting families and visiting addresses linked to deceased firearm owners to trace fi****ms and check compliance with the Fi****ms Control Act.

When a licensed firearm owner passes away, the firearm does not automatically become the lawful possession of an heir or family member. There are specific requirements around possession, storage, administration, transfer or disposal.

Families are encouraged to confirm:

🔸 Where is the firearm?
🔸 Who currently has possession or control of it?
🔸 Is it being lawfully and securely stored?
🔸 Has the executor dealt with the required SAPS/DFO notifications?
🔸 Is there a documented plan to transfer, sell, store, surrender or deactivate it?

SAGA’s message is clear: do not wait until SAPS arrives at the door. If there is uncertainty, deal with it now.

Responsible firearm ownership includes planning for what happens to fi****ms as part of an estate. Families should ensure proper documentation, secure storage, and contact with the local DFO where required.

SAGA has also produced Factsheet 401 – Fi****ms in a Deceased Estate, which provides practical guidance for executors and heirs. Members who need a copy can contact SAGA at [email protected].

Plan it. Document it. Deal with it before it becomes a problem.

🎯 The 10 Commandments for Hunters 🎯

The principles that guide every responsible hunter in the field.

1️⃣ Don’t step on anything you can step over.
2️⃣ Don’t look for game, look for movement.
3️⃣ Always approach against the wind.
4️⃣ The best camouflage is stillness and silence.
5️⃣ Take only the gear that helps you hunt longer, harder, and smarter.
6️⃣ A rainstorm isn’t a reason to leave — it’s a reason to stay.
7️⃣ Camouflage your appearance, your sound, and your scent.
8️⃣ Be sure of your shot — nothing is more costly than regret.
9️⃣ Hunt where the animals are, not where you think they should be.
🔟 Respect the hunt. Honour the responsibility.

These principles remind us that hunting is about patience, discipline, and respect — for the environment, the animal, and the responsibility we carry.
