MPUMALANGA SPORT CONFEDERATION COMMEMORATES OLYMPIC DAY 2026
23 June 2026 marks the global celebration of Olympic Day, a special occasion that unites people around the world through sport, physical activity, and healthy living. This yearβs theme, βYou Can Do This. Letβs Moveβ, encourages people of all ages, particularly young people, to take the first step towards a more active lifestyle and to discover the transformative power of sport.
Olympic Day commemorates the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 23 June 1894 at the Sorbonne in Paris, where Pierre de Coubertin championed the revival of the Ancient Olympic Games. Since its inception, the Olympic Movement has sought to build a better world through sport by promoting friendship, excellence, and respect among all people.
As the Mpumalanga Sport Confederation (MSC), we proudly join the global sporting community in celebrating Olympic Day 2026. We recognize sport as a powerful tool for social cohesion, personal development, nation-building, and community empowerment.
This year's theme reminds us that every athlete, coach, administrator, volunteer, and supporter started somewhere. The journey of sport begins with a single step. Whether it is a child kicking a ball on a dusty field, a young athlete training before sunrise, or a community member taking a walk for better health, every movement matters.
As South Africa commemorates Youth Month, Olympic Day presents an opportunity to reflect on the important role sports plays in shaping the future of our young people. In a society challenged by social ills such as substance abuse, crime, violence, and unemployment, sport remains one of the most effective platforms for keeping young people engaged, disciplined, inspired, and hopeful.
Despite challenges relating to access to quality sports facilities and resources, young people across Mpumalanga continue to demonstrate resilience and determination. They continue to train, compete, and pursue their dreams because sport is more than a game. It is a pathway to opportunity, leadership, education, and personal growth.
The Mpumalanga Sport Confederation would also like to encourage athletes, coaches, officials, clubs, federations, and sport enthusiasts throughout the province to share their personal stories about why sport is important to them. By sharing these experiences, we can create a stronger atmosphere of togetherness, inspire others to become active, and showcase the positive impact sport continues to have on our communities.
Sport has the unique ability to bring people together regardless of age, race, gender, background, or ability. It teaches us teamwork, respect, perseverance, and the value of working towards a common goal.
In the words that reflect the vision of Mpumalanga Sport Confederation President, Mr Linda Zwane:
βSport remains one of the greatest investments we can make in our people. It builds character, creates opportunities, strengthens communities, and gives hope to future generations. As we celebrate Olympic Day and Youth Month, let us continue creating environments where every young person can believe in themselves, pursue their dreams, and discover their potential through sport. Together, we can inspire a generation that chooses sport, health, unity, and excellence.β
As we celebrate Olympic Day 2026, let us all answer the call to move, participate, and inspire others.
You Can Do This. Let's Move.
Happy Olympic Day 2026!
