Beautiful words of our Legends
Patrick Moodley Left The Opposition Eating The Dust
Patrick (Putts) Moodley was born in Clairwood in 1959 to Emily (nee)Hendricks and Steven 'Crimes' Moodley. Steven Moodley himself was an ardent footballer in his time. Patrick Moodley was the only boy in his family of thirteen children. In 1979 at the age of twenty Moodley married professional nurse,Helen Booysen, who sadly passed away in 2010 after a bout of swine flu. Moodley was extremely devastated. His tide of grief was overwhelming, and to this day he becomes emotional when talking about her passing. However, he speaks fondly of his current partner who does not wish to be mentioned.
The Apartheid Regime had a profound impact on South African football, shaping its development, organisation, and the experiences of players, like Patrick Moodley. Enforced racial segregation, which extended into sports, including football was the order of the day. Black, Coloured, and Indian players were excluded from competing in w
White leagues and tournaments.The South African Football Association (SAFA) was divided along racial lines, leading to the establishment of separate leagues for different racial groups. The White league was more organised and received better funding and resources compared to the Black leagues.
This lack of access to mainstream football led to the development of strong black leagues, such as the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) and later the National Soccer League (NSL). These leagues produced talented players, like Patrick Moodley, Trevor Cheesy Baptist, Elvis Sing , who would later gain recognition.
In 1978 while studying at Bechet Coloured Teachers Training College,Moodley was approached by Amazulu with a lucrative offer which he could not refuse at the time. He remained with Amazulu for eight years. There he earned the nickname 'Siga-bopha', because of his 'cutting through the defence' style of playing. From 1979-1981 he played for the Indomitable Wentworth team,Leeds, when they won promotion to the FPL. Thereafter, this soccer playing school teacher moved on to African Wanderers, where he played for three years, then to Bushbucks as player and coach
Moodley recalls that during his time at Leeds he was a rightwinger, Cheesy Baptist was a left winger , while Elvis Sing was a striker, and they shared a friendship like no other. He describes their synergy on the soccer field as symbiotic. Among the three of them, many goals were created and ultimately scored.
According to Wellington M**h , Patrick Moodley was a different entity. He was an entertainer, dazzling the audience now and then with exquisite control and leg work. His ability to beat opponents with his flair, agility, body feints or sudden changes in acceleration made him one of the greatest dribblers of the game.
M**h says that a perfectly executed dribble arguably remains the most thrilling sight in football, and Patrick Moodley possessed the ability to have the opposition left eating the dust
An old football fan says that Moodley was known for his versatility and adaptability, and these qualities served him well in the dynamic world of football. He said that Moodley embraced different positions and playing styles with ease. His sharp intuition allowed him to read the game, making him a formidable opponent. Throughout his time as a soccer player, he contributed positively to each team that he played for, which made him an essential asset.
On the lighter side,Lloyd Keshwar,Wentworth football history aficionado recalls:
Blondie Fynn, star soccer player, had loaned some money to Steven, Crimes Moodley, father of Patrick Moodley. After giving him the runaround, Fynn finally caught up with he,and asked him when he would pay back the money, to which Crimes Moodley responded;
βDon't you know that Crime doesn't pay?β
Lloyd Keshwar remembers a time when they were little boys : They played football all the time and anywhere. They kicked battered old footballs around vacant dusty fields, even up against walls. At the time they did not have access to many opportunities and also had to deal with many prejudices directed towards non-white people. It was not easy, but if they did not focus, They would not have achieved anything.
One event has always stood head and shoulders above the others, was circa 1970, the eyes of about 30 000 spectators were drawn to Patrick Moodley,when during an interval, they as little boys, started playing a makeshift game at the side of the field at Kingsmead Stadium with their own tattered soccer ball. They were imitating their hero, Greg Farrel from Durban City, whom they had come to watch. The response from the crowd on seeing Moodleyβs adept manoeuvring of the ball was electric. Keshwar says that the spectacle of that brief period in time was arguably, the crowning moment in the shaping of Moodleyβs footballing career.
Keshwar recalls that they probably loved soccer from such a tender age because it spoke to their desire to have a cause to fight for. Living in Wentworth after being just dumped there by apartheid enforcement laws, they were hardwired for a quest, or even a mission to find their rightful place in an unjust society, and soccer was their only respite.
