KZN NORTH COAST FISHING UPDATE
Sunset Kob on the Okuma Nemesis
A beautiful sunset session on the KZN North Coast produced a quality 72 cm Kob for Steve Pretorius, caught on chokka during an outgoing spring tide. The sea was nice and flat, with excellent fishing conditions. The outgoing spring tide produced a good opportunity, and Steve made the most of it with a solid Kob.
THE TACKLE
Rod: Okuma Nemesis 14' 4–6oz
Reel: Okuma Salina 8000
Hook: Inline Circle 5/0 with dangle
The Okuma Nemesis 14' immediately stands out with its light, well-balanced feel. For long sessions on the beach or rocks, the reduced weight makes repeated casting much more comfortable.
The rod delivers a smooth, responsive casting action while still providing the backbone needed when a good Kob picks up the bait. This 72 cm fish gave Steve a solid fight, putting the Nemesis through its paces.
Bait: Chokka

Inspired Series Performance
From the moment I first picked up the Inspired rod, it stood out. It’s incredibly lightweight and perfectly balanced in hand, finished with sleek, minimal EVA grips, Fuji FazLite guides, and a distinctive fish-scale pattern along the blank.
After a few sessions on the water and landing a couple of fish, it’s clear this rod performs as good as it looks — easily matching the feel and capability of many premium rods on the market.
Designed to deliver precision and comfort from the very first cast, the Inspired rod range combines lightweight balance with clean, minimalist EVA grips for all-day fishability. Fuji FazLite guides enhance casting efficiency and durability, while the distinctive fish-scale pattern finish reflects the attention to detail built into every blank.
On the water, performance speaks for itself — a responsive tip for lure control and bite detection, backed by strong lower-section power to confidently handle hard-fighting fish. Ideal for soft plastics, topwater presentations and bucktail jigs, the Inspired series meets the demands of serious lure anglers.
Available models:
• 7'2" Medium
• 7'2" Medium Heavy

Rare KZN gem! The Lobotes surinamensis (Tripletail) 🇿🇦
The Lobotes, also known as the Tripletail or sometimes the Black Grunt, is a rare and highly sought-after game fish along the KwaZulu-Natal coast.
Why it's so unique:
Its extended dorsal and a**l fins give it that unmistakable "three-tail" appearance, making it one of the most distinctive fish in our waters.
Where to find them:
Mostly along the northern KZN coastline, with hotspots like the Tugela River Mouth.
Behaviour:
Often seen drifting near the surface around structure such as buoys, driftwood, and estuaries. It's a clever, patient ambush predator waiting for prey.
Juveniles:
Young fish float sideways, mimicking dead leaves to avoid predators, providing incredible natural camouflage.
Size:
Can reach up to 110 cm and around 20 kg, with most catches averaging around the 80 cm mark. They are exceptionally powerful fighters.
Feeding habits:
Opportunistic feeders that readily take prawns, octopus leg, chokka, sardines, small fish, and crustaceans. In the Tugela area, they are even known to take chicken guts.
Rarity & status:
Not a protected species, but very rare in South African waters, making every catch something special.
Best practice:
We strongly encourage catch and release to help preserve this incredible species for future generations of anglers.
A true bucket-list fish for any KZN angler. Well done on an unforgettable catch!

THE ROD OF DREAMS
Sitting alongside a serious blue fish — arguably one of the perfect species to target with the Okuma Nemesis 14'6" 3–5oz.
The Nemesis is the perfect all-round edible rod, offering a great balance between sensitivity, lightness and power.
The soft, responsive tip is a major advantage when targeting blue fish. They are incredibly hard fighters for their size, but you don't need to overpower them during the fight. The softer tip allows you to enjoy those powerful runs while still maintaining control.
And when a better fish comes along, the Nemesis has the backbone to put the pressure on.
Two quality blues landed during the very first morning session with the new Okuma Nemesis.
Light enough for the long session. Sensitive enough to enjoy the bite. Strong enough when it matters.
