On Friday evening at 5pm, a bunch of hardy paddlers from Dabulamanzi Cane Club took to the water on Emmarentia Dam, Johannesburg. Holdfast paddling ambassador Brad Boulle had rallied the troops to take on their own version of the ‘backyard ultra’ that they dubbed the ‘Backwater Ultra’.

The concept? Complete 160km of paddling in equal portions every hour on the hour, over 24 hours.

20 paddlers began the 24 hour epic, and 12 joined them in the morning for the 12 hour version. By 5pm on Saturday, 14 of those 20 had completed the 160km challenge, and all 12 their 80kms. They were tired and broke, but the stoke was high!

Now that Brad’s had some much needed sleep, here’s his closing thoughts:

Here’s some wisdom from the sage himself for planning your next overland mission from a photographer’s perspective👇

“So, with all that in mind, let’s go with LOCAL ADVENTURE for this one, and make the mission to one of my favourite Northern Cape Destinations - Naries Namakwa Retreat.”

1. Leave around 4AM in the morning - and try to travel on week days - to miss the traffic rush. 🕓

2. Explore at least one back road you don’t know en route, because any trip should be about both the journey AND the destination! 🛣️

3. Double-Cab for the win, with camera kit easily accessible on the back seat, and all your toys out of the dust or mud on top of your Holdfast Adventure Rack. 🧳

4. Focus outdoor shooting for the hours around dawn and dusk, plus those star trails after midnight ... you can sleep when you get back home. 🌅
