Welcome to the False Bay Underwater Club (FBUC)! The club has been going for over 75 years, and we are proud to say that it’s the oldest diving club in South Africa, and one of the oldest in the world. All divers, prospective divers and retired divers are welcome to drop by on any Wednesday evening for a drink, a chat and an air fill (free for members). The clubhouse is open every Wednesday night

Night mode: ON. 🔦 ✨
A massive shoutout to everyone who geared up for last night’s club dive! The visibility played along, and the local critters definitely came out to play. There is nothing quite like watching the reef wake up under the dive torch.

From Rescue to Release: Five Turtle VIPs Go Home
We love it when a plan comes together through shared passion, care and true collaboration. The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation is one of our very close Sea Turtle Partners, and they recently entrusted us to release five rehabilitated turtles into the warm waters of northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Bayleaf, Bubbles, Mojo Jojo, Peppa and Pimento were treated like the VIPs they are, from the moment they were rescued between Wilderness and False Bay, throughout their rehabilitation journeys, during their flight to SAAMBR, and finally, during their return to the ocean.
Bubbles, a loggerhead turtle, weighed a mere 60 grams when she was found stranded in Struisbaai in 2024. By the time she was ready for release, she was a strong 7.7 kg. Bayleaf, a green turtle, weighed an impressive 13.2 kg before release and is hopefully already enjoying the beautiful algal beds along our coastline.
South Africa’s sea turtle conservation community continues to grow, and we are very grateful to the members of the public who find stranded turtles and take action. Without those first phone calls, turtle lifts, and real concern, we would not be able to give these ocean travellers the care they need or the chance to return home to the sea. Thank you to everyone who helped rescue, rehabilitate, transport and release these special turtles. And to Bayleaf, Bubbles, Mojo Jojo, Peppa and Pimento: go well, little VIPs.

Our Peppa 🐢💚
One minute you’re happily looking at cuttlefish.
The next, a freediver appears out of nowhere like some kind of underwater ninja and takes ten years off your life. 🤿😂
How they move so quietly underwater will forever remain a mystery.

Last night we had a fascinating evening with fellow FBUC member Dr Ken Findlay, sharing hands-on insights into whale species, the history of whaling, modern whale research, and the vital role science plays in monitoring and supporting the recovery of these once severely threatened animals.
We also learned how everyday ocean users can now contribute valuable observations to ongoing research, helping protect and better understand our oceans and the incredible creatures that call them home.
Thank you Dr Findlay for a fantastic talk!
You never really know what you’re going to see on a dive in Cape Town. One day it’s calm and quiet, the next it’s dolphins everywhere and you’re just trying to take it all in. Moments like this are why we keep getting back in the water.
