Herbert Mensah: Rugby’s Future Depends on Expanding Opportunity, Commercial Vision and Global Reach
By ASVG Media
Rugby Africa President and World Rugby Executive Board Member Herbert Mensah, has called for a bold transformation of the global game, arguing that rugby’s future will be built by expanding opportunity beyond its traditional powerhouses rather than concentrating resources among a select few nations. In his latest opinion piece, Mensah praised the launch of the new Nations Championship and Nations Cup as a major step toward creating meaningful international competition, while emphasizing that rugby must evolve into a year-round commercial product capable of attracting new fans, broadcasters, sponsors, and investors. He contends that although rugby possesses one of the world’s most compelling sporting products, its long-term sustainability depends on better storytelling, stronger event presentation, greater accessibility, and consistent investment in emerging rugby nations.
Drawing particular attention to Africa’s immense untapped potential, Mensah stressed that the continent’s greatest need is not talent, but structured investment, competitive pathways, improved logistics, and sustainable commercial models that allow national unions to thrive. He pointed to Zimbabwe’s spirited performance in the Nations Cup as evidence of Africa’s promise and urged rugby to embrace the lessons of football by expanding participation, creating more global moments, and commercializing the sport without sacrificing its identity. Mensah concluded that rugby’s next era will ultimately be defined not by those already inside stadiums, but by its ability to inspire millions of new supporters around the world who have yet to discover the game.
