Gardeners prune healthy plants not because they're failing, but because growth sometimes requires letting go.

The same can be true in our careers.

We often think progress means adding more: more goals, more responsibilities, more achievements.

But sometimes growth comes from letting go of what no longer fits.

An outdated goal.
A limiting belief.
A role you've outgrown.
An expectation that was never really yours.

Not all growth comes from doing more.

Sometimes it comes from making space.

We're halfway through the year.

Before focusing on what's still left to do, take a moment to reflect on what's already happened.

What have you learned?
What's working well?
What do you want more of in the next six months?
What are you ready to leave behind?

A mid-year reflection isn't about judging yourself for what you haven't done.

It's about pausing, taking stock, and choosing your next steps with intention.

The trees don't worry when they lose their leaves.

They don't rush the seasons or force growth before it's time.

Instead, they do what nature has always done: conserve energy, strengthen their roots, and trust the process.

Yet many of us expect ourselves to be productive, motivated, and growing all the time.

What if this quieter season isn't a setback?

What if it's root work?

Not all growth is visible. Sometimes the most important growth happens beneath the surface.

We’re moving into winter. A natural slowing down.

And maybe you’re feeling it too - a bit stuck, a bit tired, a bit unsure of what’s next.

This time of year isn’t always about pushing forward.
Sometimes it’s about pausing long enough to actually hear yourself again.

You don’t need to have it all figured out right now.

Motivation is not something we feel all the time.

There will be seasons where you feel energised, focused, and inspired - and others where simply getting through the day feels harder than usual.

During these periods, it can help to stop relying only on motivation and return to smaller, steadier things:
rest, routine, clarity, support, and self-compassion.

It’s also important to remember that motivation often comes after action, not before it.
Many people wait to feel motivated before starting, but often it’s the small, manageable actions that create momentum over time.

Sometimes motivation returns not because you pushed yourself harder, but because you gave yourself what you actually needed.

You are allowed to be human, not productive all the time.

Mid-year is often when motivation starts to dip. Energy is lower, pressure has accumulated, and many employees are carrying more than what is visible on the surface.

One of the most effective things organisations can do during this time is pause and reconnect with their people as humans, not just performers.

Recognition, meaningful conversations, flexibility, growth opportunities, and genuine care often have a far greater impact on motivation than pressure alone.

People are more likely to stay engaged when they feel seen, supported, and connected to purpose - especially during the quieter, more difficult parts of the year.

Winter and school holidays can bring a very different rhythm to life. Routines shift, energy feels lower, and there can be a quiet pressure to still keep everything going as normal.

If you have children, this season can feel especially full. There is often more emotional, mental, and practical load to carry, which is why it becomes even more important to lower the pressure where you can and allow things to be simpler.

If you don’t have children, winter can still affect motivation, mood, energy, and overall wellbeing. Slower days, feeling more tired, or wanting more rest is not necessarily laziness - sometimes it is simply your body and mind responding to the season.

For all of us, this time of year can be a reminder that we are not machines. Rest, warmth, connection, and gentleness matter too.

Sometimes a career no longer fits the person you’ve become.

Not because you’ve failed, but because people grow, priorities shift, and what once felt aligned may no longer feel right.

Career clarity rarely arrives all at once.
It often develops through reflection, curiosity, and small intentional steps.

What energises you?
What drains you?
What no longer fits?

You do not need all the answers right now.

Feeling constantly tired or burnt out is often less about doing too little, and more about carrying too much, especially things that don’t energise or nourish us, for too long.

A few gentle reminders if you’ve been feeling depleted lately:

• Rest is productive too
• Boundaries protect your energy
• You do not need to earn rest
• Not everything needs your immediate attention
• Taking breaks can improve clarity and focus
• Your nervous system needs recovery, not just motivation
• It’s okay to slow down before your body forces you to

Burnout rarely happens overnight.
Recovery usually doesn’t either.

Small, consistent changes often matter more than dramatic ones.
