Starter’s journey began with a local “rebel” soccer game in 1996 informal, spirited, and deeply rooted in community. What started as play quickly became more: a safe, supportive space where young people could grow, learn, and belong. This grassroots approach laid the foundation for a programme that listened to local needs and responded with practical opportunities for youth development. Growth into a Foundation
As community needs expanded, Starter Soccer Club evolved into Starter Soccer & Netball Club, and ultimately into Starter Academy Sport and Education Foundation. In 2012, Starter formally registered as a community-based entity, affirming its long-term commitment to structured programmes and partnerships. This transformation reflects Starter’s ability to adapt while staying true to its mission of empowering communities. Key Programmes and Partnerships
• Mitchell’s Plain Rugby Academy Programme: A dedicated initiative combining sport and education to help young people excel both on the field and in the classroom.
• Collaborations with Maties Rugby Club: Partnerships such as the Maties Mitchell’s Plain Academy and the Maties Rugby Academy (Stellenbosch University) extend opportunities for youth through established university sport structures. These collaborations highlight Starter’s role as a bridge-builder, connecting local talent with broader platforms. Today and Beyond
