CARP WEATHER WARNING

The sea anglers have Kobtober. Every year they get the radio shows, the newspaper columns, the bragging rights.

The freshwater crowd has Carptober. And this year it comes with a weather warning.

The JBK Carp Weather Service has detected a serious storm forming over South African dams. Expected impact: busy bite alarms, wet landing nets, and anglers phoning in 'sick' on Monday.

There's a point at every Catch Club session when the waiting stops and the scramble for the landing net starts.

At Owen's birthday on Friday, it started fairly early and then kept happening.

Rods bending. Mates running for the landing net. Two boys crouched over the keepnet. Every single angler held a fish before prize-giving, and a few held more than one.

Every one of those fish was caught using only Thunder Baits products, the same range we stock at jbkoutdoors.com/shop (more on that later this week). But mostly it was a group of boys who stuck at it, helped each other, and didn't want to stop.

JBK OUTDOORS OCEAN ADVENTURE — CANCELLED

Unfortunately, we’ve made the decision to cancel the JBK Outdoors Ocean Adventure scheduled for 4 October at Miller’s Point.

We apologise for any disappointment this may cause and sincerely thank everyone who showed interest, shared the event and supported the idea.

We were looking forward to getting the kids out on the water, giving them a chance to fish, learn some new skills and enjoy a proper ocean adventure.

While this one won't be going ahead, we hope to bring you another JBK Outdoors Ocean Adventure together in the future.

Owen's birthday had no jumping castle and no party packs. It had a dam at Eagle Creek, a table full of bait, six of his mates and a rod each.

Before a line went in the water, every boy got a proper briefing on setting up his rig and casting.

Then came a special treat: Kian Mcm , who fishes for the Western Province Under-19 A angling team, joined us for the morning to show the boys how the pros do it. Groundbait, feeders, casting, the lot. Not many birthday parties come with a provincial angler on the bank.

It started grey and chilly. By the end, the sky was blue, every boy had held a fish, and every boy went home with a certificate!

Owen got one more: Best Host Ever, signed by all his friends.

The real review came at the end, though. It was time to pack up, and nobody wanted to.

Happy birthday, Owen. Thanks for spending it with us at Catch Club.

This is what a school holiday should look like.

A boat.
A fishing rod.
A screaming reel.
And that moment when you realise… YOU'VE GOT ONE!

On 27 September, we're taking kids aged 5–16 out on the water at Miller's Point for the JBK Outdoors Ocean Adventure, together with Katvis Charters.

4 hours of boat fishing, challenges, new skills, and hopefully plenty of fish stories to take home.

And yes… they keep their catch.

Heritage Day is coming. And apparently, sitting on the couch isn't a recognised Heritage Day tradition.

This year, bring the kids to Eagle Creek and see what happens when you give them a fishing rod instead.

There’ll be carp, fishing challenges, bragging rights and — depending on the fish — some highly questionable stories afterwards.

Saturday at the dam: wind 1, boys 5.

The boys showed up ready to fish, and they were not about to let a bit of wind ruin the day.

The wind would blow, settle down, then blow again. So every time it gave us a break, the boys got their lines in the water — and it paid off.

Alex was first on the board, landing an absolute beauty and, naturally, that was all it took to turn the session into a full-blown competition.

Suddenly everyone was watching everyone else's rod, counting fish and keeping score. You could literally see the excitement in their steps.

Kai was the last one to get amongst the fish. But once he started... he didn't stop.

Four fish for Kai!

And the best part? Michelle messaged me afterwards with Kai's review of the day:

"Today was the best day ever."

I think we'll take that as a 5-star review.

That's what the Catch Club is about — getting kids outdoors, teaching them to fish, and giving them a day they're still talking about afterwards.
