Headstart Swim School in Claremont. Our Swim SA registered instructors teach beginner swimming HEADSTART is a Cape Town based #swimschool.

Our Claremont school opened in May 2006, and is run according to Swimming South Africa approved, Learn-to-swim techniques. We believe that adults and children learn better through having fun in a safe, non-threatening environment. In 2020 we became an approved, Covid Compliant swimming venue and school. We teach learn to swim lessons and stroke correction year round in our indoor, heated pool. SSA

Behind every new skill, brave attempt and proud smile is often a relationship built on trust. 🏊

For a child learning to swim, their instructor can become the person encouraging them to try again, celebrating the little victories and helping them discover that they are capable of more than they thought.

Learning to swim isn’t always a straightforward journey. There can be nerves, hesitation, frustration and plenty of small steps before a big breakthrough. That’s why the relationship between a swimmer and their teacher can be such an important part of the process.

As we come to the end of HeadStart’s 20th birthday month, we’re celebrating not only the thousands of swimmers who have been part of our journey, but also the incredible instructors who have helped guide them along the way. 💙

Behind every confident swimmer is a journey—and often, someone who believed in them along the way.

Here’s to the people, relationships and little moments that have made the past 20 years of HeadStart so special. 🎂🏊

Swimming lessons aren’t just about what happens between the swimmer and their teacher. Parents play an important role too—and sometimes, the most helpful thing you can do is take a small step back.

1. Keep your energy calm and encouraging 💙
Children are often very aware of the emotions of the people they feel safest with. If you’re feeling nervous about something, try to keep your voice, expression and energy calm. Your confidence can help them feel more comfortable trying something new.

2. Let the teacher lead the lesson 🏊
We know it can be tempting to call out instructions from the side of the pool—especially when you want your child to succeed! But allowing the teacher to guide the lesson helps your child focus and build their own relationship with their instructor.

3. Sometimes, a little space can help 🌊
If a teacher suggests stepping away from the pool area, it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Children can sometimes behave differently when their parent or safe person is nearby. Giving them a little space may help them focus, build independence and engage more fully in their lesson.

Every child—and every swimming journey—is different. Sometimes the biggest progress happens when we give them the support, encouragement and space they need to discover what they’re capable of. 💙

As we come to the end of HeadStart’s 20th birthday month, we’re especially grateful for all the families who have trusted us to be part of their children’s swimming journeys.

Here’s to many more years of learning, growing and building confident swimmers—together. 💙

Every swimmer’s journey starts somewhere. 💙

For some, it starts as a baby in someone else’s arms, getting used to the feeling of water.

For others, it starts with tiny hands gripping tightly to an instructor, learning that the pool can be a safe and happy place.

Sometimes it looks like trying something alone for the very first time. Sometimes it’s practising the same thing over and over until suddenly, it clicks.

And sometimes, that first step happens much later.

One of our favourite things about Headstart is that learning to swim doesn’t belong to one particular age. We’ve taught babies taking their first little dips, children finding their confidence and adults deciding that now is finally their time to learn.

Every one of those journeys looks different — and every one has to begin somewhere.

As we celebrate another Headstart birthday, we’ve been thinking a lot about how much can change with time. Another birthday might mean another candle on the cake, but it can also mean another year of trying, learning, growing and doing things you once couldn’t do. 🎂🏊‍♀️

Whether your first lesson happens at 1, 7, 27 or 67, there’s no “right” age to start.

You just have to start. 💙

As a gift from us to you, don’t forget to enter our birthday competition for your chance to win a free term of swimming. The competition ends tomorrow! 🎁🏊‍♀️

What if swimming lessons teach a little more than just swimming? 💙

Research suggests that activities involving movement, memory and following instructions can support children’s developing attention and executive functioning skills. While research into the specific benefits of swimming is still growing, every lesson gives children opportunities to practise these skills in a fun and meaningful way.

During a lesson, children are doing a surprising amount at once. They’re listening to instructions, remembering what comes next, coordinating different parts of their body and learning how to keep trying when something feels difficult or unfamiliar. They’re also building independence — from getting into the pool by themselves to blowing bubbles, remembering a sequence or attempting something they once felt nervous about.

At Headstart, we celebrate every learning moment because each one matters. Whether it’s a big breakthrough or a tiny step forward, every achievement shows that our students are growing, learning and becoming more confident in themselves.

Birthdays are a lovely reminder of just how much can change in a year. In the pool, we get to celebrate those moments of progress all the time — one brave attempt, new skill and proud smile at a time. 🏊‍♀️🎂

What have you felt most proud of this month — as a parent, a teacher or a learner yourself? 💙

The little moments are often the ones we remember. 💙

Not necessarily the biggest achievements, but the moments that made you realise, “Oh my goodness, they’re really doing it.”

The proud smile after their first jump in. The excitement of showing you something they’ve been practising. The day they suddenly seem a little more comfortable in the water. Or that look across the pool that says, “Did you see that?!”

These are the moments that make swimming lessons about so much more than learning a new skill. They’re the moments parents get to watch their children discover what they’re capable of.

And isn’t that a little like birthdays? 🎂 They give us a reason to pause and appreciate who our children are becoming — not just the big changes, but all the little moments we’ve collected along the way.

As HeadStart celebrates 20 years, we’re grateful for all the families who have allowed us to be part of those moments. Here’s to many more proud smiles, excited faces and “Did you see that?!” moments in the years to come. 💙

What’s a swimming moment you’ll never forget? 👇

Every swimmer’s journey looks a little different. 💙

Learning to swim isn’t a race, and children don’t all develop the same skills at the same time. One swimmer might feel completely at ease in the water but take longer to master a particular movement, while another may have the physical skill but still be building their confidence.

That’s why progress can’t always be measured by comparing one child to another. Sometimes it’s about noticing the things that might otherwise go unnoticed — becoming a little more comfortable in the water, trying something they were hesitant to do, or discovering that they can do something they once thought was too difficult.

There’s no single timeline for learning to swim. What matters is that each child has the time, encouragement and support they need to keep moving forward. 🏊‍♀️

And perhaps that’s something birthdays remind us of too. There’s no “right” amount of growing, learning or changing to have done by a certain age. Every child gets there in their own way and in their own time. 🎂

As HeadStart celebrates 20 years, we’re proud to continue creating a space where swimmers can learn at their own pace, build their confidence and enjoy the process along the way. 💙

🎉 Birthdays are a reminder of how much we’ve grown.

As HeadStart celebrates 20 years, we’ve been reflecting on the hundreds of students who have grown alongside us. While learning to swim is an incredibly important life skill, one of the biggest transformations often happens beneath the surface.

Swimming lessons help individuals develop confidence, resilience, independence and trust in their own abilities. Every new skill they master—whether it’s putting their face in the water for the first time or swimming independently—teaches them that they can overcome challenges with patience and practice.

Those lessons don’t stay in the pool. They become part of how individuals approach school, friendships, new experiences and life.

Over the past 20 years, we’ve been proud to help build not only confident swimmers, but confident people. 💙
