One minute you’re racing along side a racer and the next he’s gone. The unfortunate part is this was not a cause of the race organization or the course. 3 kids no longer have a father because a driver was impatient and only cared for himself and passed a car on a low speed road and didn’t see the 10:30am day lit biker with double blinky lights, reflective vest and traffic triangle on his back.

I’ve spent tha day talking to my teenage students in class about biker laws and riding vs driving on a roadway. I hope in some small way I’ve been able to explain bikes can be on a roadway. Driving schools do a horrible job explaining this. I’ve tried to explain a 30sec. delay to pass a rider safely can mean the difference between life and death.

Drivers have this negative attitude towards bikers. Trails are always better but sometimes to get from one point to another we’re going to be on a road. Please be patient and understand 4 wheels, speed and weight over 2 wheels and a cyclist. 4 wheels wins every single time! PLEASE WATCH OUT AND SHARE THE ROAD WITH CYCLISTS!

How wild do you want an adventure race to be? How remote do you want to go? Do you prefer to stay where there's some cellphone signal and creature comforts?
There are some wild places out there but we won't go there if you prefer lush green fields and running water.

Francois ripped open his leg during the kloofing section but refused to quit. He pushed through the full course, racing with absolute grit and determination — and his team still claimed 2nd place in the 16-hour race. That’s the spirit of true adventure racing.

He takes home a brand-new pair of shoes from 👟🔥

The Hessequa Adventure Race started yesterday at 2pm and the 36h teams have been out there for 15 hours. Team Stellar had a solid kloofing section before getting on bicycles. Their night nav was on point and they are leading the second bike leg with more than an hour.
