Silent Steps was initiated eleven years ago to raise funds for the National Institute for the Deaf.

What started as a solo, unsupported 27 day, 570km hike along the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, evolved into a fully fletched hiking business over the past ten years. The initial fundraising activity was a 570km unsupported walk up the Skeleton Coast of Namibia undertaken by Anette Grobler. After the walk Ms Grobler received several requests from people wanting to undertake similar ‘off the beaten tr

Final call for Shoreline of the San

One week from today, a group walks out of Elands Bay at first light.

Five days and 53 km up the West Coast to Strandfontein — beaches without footprints, 30,000-year-old stories written in rock, and Johnny, Marika and Anette waiting at Vensterklip.

A couple of places are still open.

"Can I come alone?"

Most of our hikers do.

You arrive as a stranger with a daypack. By the second evening there is a seat saved for you at the table, and by the last day you are swapping numbers in the parking lot. We watch it happen on every trail.

Our groups are small, the pace is shared, and nobody walks at the back alone.

So yes — come alone. You won't stay that way. And if you know somebody who has been waiting for company before she books: send her this.

Following the recent incidents where hikers have found themselves in serious difficulty after being caught by the incoming tide, we would like to make an urgent appeal to fellow hikers:
Please do not attempt the section from Buffels Bay to Sedgefield — and especially not the section from Swartvlei to Wilderness — unless you are 100% certain about the tide times and conditions.
Once you are beyond Ghericke’s Point, being caught by high tide can put you in serious danger. The cliffs on your right-hand side are sheer, leaving very few options to escape the rising water.
This is exactly why we are always willing to advise hikers before they attempt this coastline. There is no shame in asking for advice — it could save your life.
We know this coastline extremely well and have been offering guided hikes along this stretch for the past six years. If you are planning to tackle any of these sections and are unsure about the tides, conditions or route, please feel free to contact us directly.
We are happy to share our knowledge and experience. Rather ask beforehand than find yourself in a situation where there is nowhere safe to go.
Respect the ocean. Know the tides. Know your route and never underestimate this coastline.

Vatiswa walked the Nam Hike with us this year.

"An amazingly unforgettable experience. Almost 3 weeks later and we are still reminiscing."

Three weeks after arriving home is usually when a hike either fades or lodges. Hers stayed. That is the Nam Hike doing what it always does — six days on the Namibian Skeleton Coast, four days on foot, 66 kilometres of coastline where the Atlantic meets the dunes. Ietsiemeer for three nights right on the beach. A wild fig tree deep in the Omaruru riverbed on the last day.
