Most of the great religions of today have codes of ethics and morals that are taught as direct instructions, usually from a divine origin. This implies that we humans cannot be trusted to behave well on our own and we need these instructions to live a good life.
This may be true, and many believe this about their faith.
But be that as it may you yourself must exercise agency in deciding what is right or wrong and this requires your own thought and reasoning.
Many of life's required actions and decisions where the dividing lines between what is good or bad are not at all clear-cut. Although much of what the holy books teach may be good and wise, much has become irrelevant or obscure due to changes in how we live and communicate over the ages.
In Tai Chi and Chi Kung, we learn how to reach a quiet place where deep consideration and contemplation can happen. When the mind is stilled within our being, insights and understandings can come. They often arrive seemingly unsummoned without any effort whatsoever into this quiet space. They have a direct bearing and relevance on you, a unique individual, and your own particular circumstances. You do not need total reliance on an ambiguous allegory or parable about good behaviour. It becomes directly apparent.
Allow yourself access to this serene quietude. Come and learn the practise of Tai Chi and Chi Kung.
Its drug free and contains 0% Alcohol!
Come to Sunningdale Sports Centre 6-7.00 pm every Tuesday, just follow the sign at the door.
Beginners welcome!

Why should you prioritise the practice of Tai Chi and Chi Kung before all other fitness regimens? A bullet list:
• It addresses the whole body-mind system, strengthening both simultaneously.
• It addresses mental and physical stress.
• It is gentle, calming, but effectively tones the whole body.
• It is sufficient on its own but lends itself very well to the addition of walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, weight training, calisthenics, and will improve your performance in just about any sport or fitness system.
• It is suitable for all ages and genders.
• It's low cost. No special equipment or clothing is needed.
• There is a live on-site experienced teacher available at classes here in your area of Bloubergstrand.
• It's easy and pleasurable to learn
• The process of learning takes place in a shared space with fellow humans seeking the same goal. This shared learning experience is better than detached online learning and leads to better and more rapid results.
• In-person on-site teacher is available.
• It’s 100% organic, natural and climate-friendly!
Come to Sunningdale Sports Centre 6-7.00pm Tuesdays and see and experience for yourself!

I teach a daily practise package of Chi Kung exercises followed by the Tai Chi form. Chi Kung is a series of easy meditative-type poses and stances, and a breathing routine to unblock the free flow of “Chi” in your body. It's timed to suit a busy lifestyle and takes 30-45 minutes to complete at a normal pace. If you do it regularly, that usually means once a day, it will greatly help keep you fit and healthy in body and mind. It is slow, quite effortless, and quite relaxing compared to other exercise regimes. It also costs less.
The best and quickest way to acquire the skills neede is it is to learn in classes from an experienced teacher like me.
As you develop the skill, you can add specific exercises to assist with muscle sprains, post-operative stiffness, arthritis, general fatigue, better concentration at work and study, and many other needs and conditions of the mind and body. It is a free and natural medicine chest!
Classes are at the Sunningdale Sports Centre ( SSC) in the suburb of Sunningdale, Bloubergstrand, 6-7 pm every Tuesday. If you live in the Bloubergstrand, Milnerton, or Table View area, it’s easy to get to. This Tuesday, 30th June, the class is free. Please come along!

Tai Chi and Chi Kung are Chinese in origin, and we must be thankful to the Chinese Masters living and dead who have brought these practises to us.
Due to the unique history and circumstances in China where unarmed combat and self-defence were developed to a high degree, the slowed-down versions of these “open-hand” forms of Tai Chi/Chi Kung emerged perhaps first as safe practice versions of normal speed “deadly” martial arts in monasteries and homes of the middle classes. As people practised and developed the slower exercises, the meditative and therapeutic benefits were discovered, and then they were practised often for that reason alone.
Since they have become known in the West, the practises have been adapted and developed to suit the lifestyle and understanding of Westerners. There are a few purists who maintain that you need an extensive knowledge of Chinese culture and history to understand the practises and derive the maximum benefit from them.
This is simply not true. Most Westerners cannot read Chinese or know little of Chinese history or culture, but their practising of Tai Chi and Chi Kung, even in these westernised styles, will be just as successful as a Chinese person born and living in China practising them. They are effective because you are a human being and because you practise regularly and correctly. The movements, poses, and exercises work just as effectively on all humans regardless of their ethnicity, age, gender, acculturation, or education level.
However, it is still useful to know while learning Tai Chi/Chi Kung how a particular movement can be speeded up and used to attack or defend against an opponent. It gives the movement context and can help in executing it better.
The quietness of mind and tranquility achieved during practise and the long-term benefit to bodily health and well-being are something attainable by all with regular and correct practise.
What is “Chi”? That is the “Chi” in Tai Chi and Chi Kung. One way to describe it is as a conceptual force that moves and flows through all living things and, to a lesser degree, in the inanimate universe. It is everywhere. The concept of Chi is central to Martial Arts and traditional Chinese medicine practice. It is very similar to Prana in Yogic practices and Indian Ayurveda ( traditional Indian medicine).
Chi drives and enlivens physical action and thought.
Over centuries, mainly Chinese monks and certain families and groups found that by meditation, exercises, and breathing correctly, the flow of Chi in any human can be cultivated and enhanced. This has resulted in the practices of Chi Kung and Tai Chi. Chi Kung always comes first and is a series of poses and exercises done while breathing evenly and deeply. They are designed to free up any blockages in the body and mind to the flow of Chi. The Tai Chi form follows this, consisting of a series of slowed-down attacking and defending movements taken from martial arts. In Martial arts, these movements done at martial arts speed can disable and even kill an opponent, but in Tai Chi the combative nature of the movements becomes slow, graceful, and meditative. It becomes peaceful and tranquil and all trace of aggression disappears.
By concentrating on the poses, exercises, and breathing in the Chi Kung and the movements in Tai Chi and perpetually trying to perfect them, one can transcend the existing mental state of any individual. The mind becomes peaceful, the body relaxed, worries and stresses fade, and the state of one's whole entity dramatically improves. It doesn’t happen in a flash but slowly as you proceed to complete your practice. You will notice the improvement at the end everytime.
This is the immediate effect. The long-term effect of doing the practice, if possible once or even twice a day, but at least 3 times a week, is an exceptional overall improvement in physical health and mental wellness.
It is of course recommended, amongst other things, to follow healthy eating practices, sleep sufficiently, cultivate positive relationships, and take some time out doing what you enjoy. But you will also find these things much easier to achieve when practicing Chi Kung and Tai Chi.
Hi all, I'd like to say a few words of warning about the very visible advertising of Tai Chi Apps that make incredulous and impossible claims. They usually display what I suspect are AI-generated images of well-proportioned bodies, often with much older heads superimposed on them. Without saying it directly, they promise to deliver results like this within weeks of using their app. Like all of these ads, they are after your credit card details so they can sign you up for an auto-renewing subscription that is difficult and time-consuming to cancel.
Please stay away. What they infer is entirely false. They give what is a noble and effective practice a bad name. Rather attend face-to-face classes in Tai Chi and Chi Kung at Sunninghill Sports Centre where you can advance in, and learn the postures and moves, and when in doubt, ask me, your trainer, questions directly about them. You only pay a relatively small monthly subscription of R600, which you can cancel at any time if you feel it's not for you for any reason. Still two free classes left for June on the 23rd and 30th, 6-7pm ( no class on the 16th; it's a public holiday). In the meantime, may your chi strengthen you!
