Janine Goes:
I have been a paediatrician for 25 years, and have dealt with many children who are over weight, lack muscle tone, core strength and have poor postures. Being passionate about health and fitness, running many marathons and the comrades, I realised that there is a need to improve health and wellness in children and get them moving.
If kids are not into mainstream sports then they are generally leading very sedentary lifestyles with poor nutrition. The habits that are ingrained in early childhood are often carried into adulthood. Statistics show that the incidence of obesity is rapidly rising and consequently the incidence of many lifestyle diseases (cardiovascular, stroke, type2 diabetes, orthopaedic problems, endocrine disorders and cancer).
It all began with the idea of playing ‘old style’ games with children...leap frog, tug of war, hop scotch...games that are familiar to many of us but kids of today would probably roll their eyes implying, “what’s that?”.
So after some serious brainstorming, I have found my partner in crime, Berenice Bredenkamp, and we have now created what is called “Kidz in Motion”.
Berenice Bredenkamp:
Being in the fitness industry for many years with a background in yoga, pilates and competing in fitness bikini competitions I have always been fascinated with the body and how we can mold and shape it like a canvas. For as long as I can remember I have always struggled with bad posture and had a very weak core which in my later teen years created a very low body image and self-esteem. Having random people ask you in your teen and tween years if you are pregnant can be very disheartening.
This could have all been prevented had a learnt from a young age mind-body connection, how to activate my core the right way and use correct technique. When Janine approached me with the “Kidz in Motion” idea I was sold!!!
I have witnessed many children suffering from no core strength, lack of muscle tone, poor balance and proprioception (body awareness) which results in learning disabilities, slow development and major problems later in life. Children who are active and excel in a single sport often develop over use injuries and postural problems, it is so important that they also take part in a functional training programme to prevent this and intern improve their sports performance. I have also seen young children and teens coming into the gym with good intentions to train but using bad form. I feel that a safe place where children can come and learn from a young age and adapt a healthy exercise regime from a young age is needed, and with that Kidz in Motion has been created.
Kidz in Motion:
A specialized program specifically developed for ALL children to promote a well rounded, functional but fun exercise regime. Classes are kept small with a maximum of x 10 children per class so that personal attention and supervision can be given. Classes are 50 min long with two well qualified trainers taking the class the whole time to ensure a safe environment.
