Growing up in a township outside Pietermaritzburg, Bongani Mazibuko fell in love with chess. As an adult, however, he realized that few children who looked like him had the same opportunity to be swept off their feet. The consequences were bigger than a board game.
βOut of all the kids who start school in South Africa, we lose 40% before they finish matric to crime, drugs, poverty, and pregnancy,β he explains. βI believe chess can make a dent in those numbers.β
That is why in 2024 Mazibuko founded Chess is My Lifestyle, an organization that teaches chess to young people in underserved neighbourhoods in South Africa and prepares them to compete in major tournaments.
Run Alex invited Chess is my lifestyle to assist in running a holiday program where children from Alexandra are introduced to chess.
From 01 July 2026, Chess is My Lifestyle kicked off the holiday program at Kwabhekilanga Sports Grounds, daily training children on how to play chess.
Founder of Chess is my lifestyle, Bongani Mazibuko, joins Alex FM.
