🌋 𝑫𝑰𝑫 𝒀𝑶𝑼 𝑲𝑵𝑶𝑾? – 𝑨𝒎𝒃𝒓𝒚𝒎 𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒐 🌋

Many people think Ambrym Volcano is no longer active because the famous glowing lava lakes at Mount Benbow and Mount Marum have disappeared. But
𝑫𝙄𝑫 𝒀𝙊𝑼 𝑲𝙉𝑶𝙒 that Ambrym is still one of Vanuatu’s most active volcanoes?

🔥 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀?
Before December 2018, both craters contained huge lakes of molten lava that glowed brightly at night. During a major eruption in 2018, cracks opened in the volcano and the lava drained deep underground, causing the glowing lakes to disappear.

🌋 𝐈𝐬 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐲𝐦 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞?
Yes! Even without the lava lakes:
• Small eruptions and lava flows can still happen.
• Thick clouds of steam and volcanic gases will rise from the craters again.
• Scientists regularly detect volcanic tremors beneath the caldera.
• Ambrym remains at Alert Level 2 (Major Unrest).

The volcano is not asleep—it is simply storing much of its energy beneath the surface.

🏜️ 𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑲𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝑨𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝑨𝒎𝒃𝒓𝒚𝒎’𝒔 𝑨𝒔𝒉 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏?
Inside the giant Ambrym caldera is a huge ash-covered plain that looks almost like a desert in the middle of a tropical island!

✅ About 12 km wide and 8 km long.
✅ Covers nearly 100 square kilometres.
✅ Made up of volcanic ash, rocks, and old lava deposits.
✅ One of the largest volcanic calderas in the Pacific region.
✅ Creates a unique landscape unlike anywhere else in Vanuatu.
✅ Formed by thousands of years of volcanic activity.
