Strengthening information management for displacement preparedness in Vanuatu

On Monday 24 August, government and partner agencies came together to preview the Displacement and Evacuation Centre Management (DECM) Cluster Information Management Portal and how it can support more coordinated management of displacement and evacuation centre information before, during and after emergencies.

The workshop provided an opportunity to strengthen user understanding of the portal, gather feedback from stakeholders and support ongoing efforts to improve preparedness and coordination for disaster displacement in Vanuatu.

Led by NDMO and supported by IOM Vanuatu through its role as co-lead of the DECM Cluster, the initiative forms part of the Sef Ples Blong Yumi Phase II project, funded by the Government of Australia Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

Strengthening Safe and Inclusive Evacuation Centres for Women and Girls in Shefa Province.

Between June and August 2026, IOM, in partnership with UN Women, the Department of Women’s Affairs, and the Vanuatu Women’s Centre, carried out community consultations and safety audits across Shefa Province to help make evacuation centres safer, more accessible, and inclusive.
Women and girls, including women with disabilities, shared their experiences and concerns through consultations in Teoumaville, Eratap, Pango, and Tanvasoko. Their input helped identify key safety, accessibility, design, and GBV-related considerations for future evacuation centres.
Partners also piloted a Safety Audit Tool at Wan Smol Bag and Maumau School to identify risks related to GBV, child protection, accessibility, safety, and social inclusion.
These initiatives will help strengthen evacuation centres as safe, dignified, and inclusive spaces for everyone, particularly women, girls, and other vulnerable groups.

On Tuesday, 18 August 2026, IOM, together with the Ministry of Justice and Social Welfare – Child Desk Unit, Vanuatu Police Force – Family Protection Unit, and UNICEF, hosted a one-day Trafficking in Persons (TIP) awareness and National Referral Mechanism (NRM) sensitization session with 35 participants from government, civil society, and non-government organisations.

The session focused on child exploitation and trafficking, including the growing risks children face through social media, online platforms, and digital technologies.
Participants strengthened their understanding of trafficking indicators, prevention, victim identification, and referral pathways to help ensure children at risk can access protection and support.

Every child deserves to grow up safe, protected and free from exploitation. Awareness, coordination and action can make a difference.

Yesterday, 23rd July 2026, marks an important step in Vanuatu's efforts to combat Trafficking in Persons (TIP), as 31 participants from government agencies, NGOs and Civil Society Organizations come together to validate Vanuatu's National Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Communication Strategy.

Trafficking in Persons remains a serious human rights and protection issue both within Vanuatu, globally and across the Pacific. Vanuatu continues to strengthen its efforts to prevent trafficking, protect victims, prosecute offenders, and build strong partnerships among key stakeholders.

Effective communication and public awareness are important to these efforts. The TIP Communication Strategy provides a coordinated approach to raising awareness, promoting safe migration practices, encouraging reporting, and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders.

During the workshop, participants reviewed and validated key sections of the strategy, ensuring it reflects a shared commitment to preventing trafficking and protecting vulnerable people across Vanuatu.
