As a local tour operator who has welcomed thousands of international guests over the years, we often receive the same questions:
"Do I need vaccinations?"
"Is malaria a concern?"
"Can I bring my prescription medication?"
Here are the answers to help you travel with confidence.
💉 Do You Need Vaccinations for Vietnam?
Before any international trip, it's a good idea to visit a travel doctor 4–6 weeks before departure. They can recommend vaccinations based on your health history and travel plans.
Yellow Fever
Good news! Vietnam does not require a Yellow Fever vaccination unless you're arriving from (or recently transited through) a country where Yellow Fever is present.
Routine Vaccinations
Make sure your regular vaccinations are up to date, including:
✅ Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR)
✅ Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (Tdap)
✅ Chickenpox (Varicella)
✅ Seasonal Influenza (Flu)
Recommended Vaccinations
Many travel clinics also recommend:
• Hepatitis A – spread through contaminated food and water.
• Typhoid – especially if you love exploring local restaurants and street food.
Don't let this discourage you from trying Vietnamese cuisine—street food is one of the highlights of visiting Vietnam! Simply choose busy vendors with freshly prepared food and good hygiene practices.
💊 Bringing Medication into Vietnam
This is one of the most common concerns, especially for travelers taking regular medication.
The good news is that bringing medication for personal use is generally straightforward.
Prescription Medication
To avoid any issues:
✔ Keep medicines in their original packaging.
✔ Ensure the pharmacy label clearly shows your name and dosage.
✔ Carry a copy of your prescription or a doctor's letter.
✔ Bring only the amount you'll need for your trip, plus a small extra supply in case of delays.
Over-the-Counter Medicines
Items such as:
Pain relievers
Cold medicine
Anti-diarrheal tablets
Stomach medication
are perfectly fine to bring for personal use. A helpful travel tip is to keep all essential medication in your carry-on luggage, just in case your checked baggage is delayed.
🦟 Do You Need Malaria Pills? For most visitors, the answer is No.
The popular destinations visited by most travelers have little to no malaria risk, including: Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and The Mekong Delta
Malaria is mainly found in some remote forested or border regions near Laos and Cambodia, areas that are not included in most tourist itineraries.
If you're following a standard sightseeing route, anti-malarial medication is generally not necessary.
🦟 Don't Forget Mosquito Protection
Although malaria is uncommon in tourist areas, dengue fever can occur in cities and throughout Vietnam.
Fortunately, protecting yourself is easy.
✔ Apply mosquito repellent, especially in the early morning and evening.
✔ Wear light-colored clothing when possible.
✔ Stay in accommodations with air conditioning or mosquito screens.
If you forget to pack repellent, don't worry! Effective local brands such as Remos and Soffell are inexpensive and available at supermarkets, convenience stores, and pharmacies across Vietnam.
If you already have a favorite repellent containing 30% DEET or Picaridin, bringing a small bottle from home is also a great option.
