“Show your Local Council why they should fund your Tournament”

If you run regional tournaments or community events, here’s an idea how to get more support from your Local Council

You don’t need a 60-page economic report to prove your value to your local council if you are running a small regional event. You just need a few clear measures to show the impact your event had on visitor spending and community involvement. It's these events that need and deserve local support.

At TiiA Consulting, we love helping local organizers show why their event matters to their Local Council.

Here are 3 simple measures you can use right now:
Visitor Count from Outside Your Area

Ask a quick survey question: “Where did you travel from today?”
Even 200 visitors from another region means new spending and that’s sports tourism.

Estimated Spend Per Person
Multiply your non-local visitor count by an average spend (such as $120 for day visitors, $300 for overnight). Your local council is likely to have their own tourism measure that they may share with you.

That’s your economic story.

Volunteer and Community Engagement
Track how many locals helped deliver the event volunteers, popup shops and anyone that helped make the event possible.

That’s your legacy story.

Share these results with your council and ask for support:
Venue subsidies
In-kind promotion
Event funding grant

If you don’t measure it, you can’t leverage it.

“We’re Very Busy... but doing what?”

A lot of activity is not strategy.
Sometimes it feels like our strategic plans are like a buffet, we just keep adding more dishes without checking what’s already on the plate.
We launch new initiatives.
We chase new projects.
We add more KPIs.
And we rarely ask Should we stop doing that thing we’ve always done?

That’s why I love the Start / Stop / Keep exercise. It’s simple. Brutal. Necessary.
What are we doing that’s working (Keep)?
What do we need to begin, finally (Start)?
And what should we just... quietly retire (Stop)?

Great strategy isn’t about adding more. It’s about aligning what we do with why we do it.

When’s the last time you asked your team what to stop doing? And were brave enough to actually stop?

Managing a sport is not easy

Pressure to change - Pressure to perform - Pressure to commercialize - Welcome to sport leadership.

Managing a sports organization, whether at community sport, national sport or international sport levels is hard work.

Balancing stakeholder management, sports governance and high-performance sport delivery are some of the biggest challenges facing today’s sports executives and sports administrators.

Managing a sport is not easy.

· Some people want big changes.

· Some people resist any change.

· Some expect your sport to become the next big commercial success overnight.

· And many expect team success, but without contributing the member funds needed to make it happen.

And somehow, you’re also trying to grow grassroots sport participation, strengthen community sport clubs and achieve results at the elite sport level.

At TiiA Consulting, we believe the starting point is an inspiring strategic plan, one that helps your sports members, clubs and teams understand their role and see themselves in a unified sport system from community to elite.

But having a strategy isn’t enough.

You need to turn strategy into action with a clear operational plan that outlines what your leadership team and staff will do to bring that strategy to life. And when progress stalls, our experience shows it’s usually because there is break down in turning strategic statements into deliberate actions to implement the strategy.

With experience as a CEO in sport leadership roles across community, national and international sport, I’ve lived these pressures and understand what it takes to align your sport community.

If you’re looking for support with your sport strategic planning, operational ex*****on, or sport governance and board reporting, let’s connect.

Let’s build a sustainable sport system that delivers for all.

Vietnam Sports 20-year Planning Forum

I recently had the opportunity to present at the 2026–2046 High-Performance Planning Workshop hosted by the Vietnam Ministry of Sports and Tourism – Vietnam Sports Department.

The forum brought together leaders and decision-makers to shape the future of elite sport in Vietnam.

I shared insights on the importance of high-performance planning to underpin sustained success at the highest level. Talent alone isn’t enough. Without the right plan, aligned support and timely ex*****on, even the most gifted athletes can fall short.

Key drivers of high performance that I shared examples included:
Clear ambitions and long-term vision
Personalized athlete development pathways
Integration of sports science and sports medicine
Strong leadership and a high-trust team environment
Strategic and tactical planning
Accountability and follow-through

Athlete success is built long before the podium —through purposeful planning, aligned systems and relentless ex*****on where every session moves the athlete closer to their reaching their goal.

What’s one thing your organization can do today to better prepare athletes and coaches to perform when it matters most?

The usual approach to a strategic planning workshop...

We’ve all been there. You’re handed a topic, a marker and a piece of butcher’s paper. You and your colleagues stare at each other unsure where to begin. Eventually, words fill the page, but are they truly strategic insights, or just an exercise in filling space?

Good strategic planning workshops need structure, facilitation and clear direction. While the classic approach of reviewing the past, assessing the present, defining the future and creating an action plan—provides a framework, is it enough?

Too often, these sessions turn into tick-the-box exercises with great discussions but little follow-through. A strategic plan is only as good as its ex*****on. That’s why a well-designed workshop should:

Prioritize clarity by ensuring priorities are actionable, measurable, and owned by the right people
Encourage real debate by creating space for diverse perspectives and challenging assumptions
Bridge strategy to operations by connecting vision to day-to-day realities
Embed accountability by defining success measures and governance structures to track progress

At TiiA Consulting, our facilitation process empowers workshop participants to find their voice and with techniques, like the 5 Whys problem-solving method, we help teams uncover the real root causes of challenges and move past surface-level answers. We focus on meaningful dialogue and clear next steps that drive real strategic impact.

What has been your experience with strategic planning workshops?

Do they lead to meaningful action or just another document on the shelf?

Great collaboration = great performances!

I'm in the Philippines working with a national sports association, helping them create a plan for future national team success.

One big takeaway? Athletes and coaches don’t just need money—they need the right support at the right time.

What’s been amazing to see is how many solutions come down to action, not just funding. When athletes, coaches, and staff work together with a clear plan, real progress happens. Excited to see where this journey takes them!

Athletes and coaches don’t underperform because they lack talent…

"The hardest part of consulting isn’t the work—it’s the work that goes into getting the work." – David A. Fields

David A. Fields writes about the Six Pillars of Consulting Success and they resonate:

Right-Side Up Thinking – Focus on what clients need, not what you want to sell.

Maximize Impact – Deliver real, tangible value.

Build Visibility – Be seen so clients can find you.

Connect with Clients – Relationships matter more than pitches.

Close with Confidence – Selling isn’t about convincing, it’s about clarity.

Deliver with Excellence – Quality work creates repeat business.

The past month has been nothing short of absolutely addictive!

Ongoing discussions in 11 different countries, with potential collaborations spanning education, touring, merchandise, equipment, strategy, broadcast, governance, sport for good with potential across more than a dozen different sports. Stay focused I hear some of you say… be open to opportunity I’m embracing right now.

I spoke with other consultants from different countries "It's hard and it's exhilarating" was the consensus… The consistency of a salary and a job is always enticing. But the anticipation of working across some, if not all, of these opportunities? It’s absolutely addictive.

I finished writing up my latest blog on the Australian Sports System... this will seem just business as usual for some - but for so many organizations they haven't set their plans before or are yet to do so for this next cycle. Here are some things which have been consistent across some major sports in Australia.

Please have a look and see how your plans align with these consistent themes...

What's your next planning process look like - or if you're ready for a first plan, TiiA Consulting would love to chat about how we could facilitate the process with you.

Australia is well-known for its sports culture from grassroots to professional and national team levels, so this weekend, my sporting experience took a unique turn as I explored the strategies of 10 different Australian sports. (It's not nerdy...)

While it wasn't the typical NBA All-Star weekend type of sports experience, I got some valuable insights into the country's sports ecosystem and I found it enjoyable!

One key observation is that successful sports have well-defined multi-year strategies and share transparently their ambitions and actions to achieve success. While this might be standard practice for some, it's not universal.

My weekend didn't involve cheering for a specific team or athlete, just my ongoing cheering for sport as a significant contributor to health, education, personal growth and good old sport for sports sake, competition and fun with your mates.
