Yushinkai Kendo Team - Hanoi -

Yushinkai Kendo Team - Hanoi - 勇信会

[English bellow]

◾ The Yushinkai Kendo Team was formerly a kendo training class organized by many senior kendoka in Hanoi. Active from 2017 to now, the training class has played a big role in the creation of an open environment for kendoka from everywhere to participate in exchanging and learning more about kendo.
◾ From the beginning of 2022, the club was officially named Yushinkai, which in Japanese means a dojo of Bravery and Honesty. Yushinkai's mission will remain to create an open dojo where all kendoka of Vietnam, regardless of background or level, can participate in the cultivation of their individual kendo as well as sharing their experiences. to the kendo community.
◾ The vision of Yushinkai is a stronger and more united Vietnamese kendo community, which can be achieved through open exchanges activities between Kendo clubs in Vietnam in the spirit of Bushido and mutual respect.

STEADFAST STEPS ON THE PATH OF KENDO

✨ Yushinkai extends our warmest congratulations to Mr. Nguyen Anh Van for brilliantly passing the examination and officially achieving 5th Dan! This is a thoroughly well-deserved milestone reflecting years of dedicated and persistent practice. 💜

✨ However, challenging 5th Dan is never an easy trial. Standing before such a major milestone, what matters most is not just the final result, but the courage to step forward and the unwavering spirit of those who take on the challenge. For just two short minutes to demonstrate one's Kendo, everyone committed to the exam poured countless hours, immense dedication, and relentless effort into every single minute of practice beforehand. Regardless of the outcome, Yushinkai deeply appreciates the dedication, seriousness, determination, and passion of everyone who took part in this examination. Grading is merely a milestone; the true spirit of Kendo is a lifelong journey. 💜

✨ Our sincere thanks to all of you for always leading the way and serving as an inspiring banner for future generations to follow. See you back on the practice floor as the Yushinkai team continues this path together! 💜💜💜

🇬🇧 English
⚔️ Why Do We Bow Before Picking Up the Sword?
If a shinai is only a bamboo sword, why do we bow before picking it up?

For beginners, Reiho (etiquette in Kendo) can sometimes feel like a set of rules to remember: bowing when entering the dojo, before and after keiko (practice), and before training with one another.
But Rei (礼) is more than simply bowing - it is an expression of respect for the dojo, the Sensei, our fellow practitioners, and Kendo itself. 🙇‍♂️🥋

🥋 Although a shinai is made of bamboo, in Kendo it represents a sword. That is why we are taught not to step over a shinai, lean on it, or casually swing or throw it. When picking up a shinai, we are also taught to bow and handle it with care.

The way we hold the sword reflects the attitude we bring to our practice.
During her visit to Yushinkai in 2025, Nobumi Sensei once shared: “When you ask yourself, ‘What if this were a real sword?’, you are forced to be honest with yourself. There is no longer any room for simply trying to look good, striking out of habit, or striking just to score a point. A correct strike is the natural result of correct posture, correct distance, and the correct state of mind.”

⚔️ Perhaps this is one of the most profound ways to understand why Kendo continues to preserve the image of the real sword, even though we practice with shinai today.
When we see the shinai simply as a piece of sporting equipment, it is easy to focus only on whether we hit our target.
But when we see it as a sword, the question is no longer simply: “Did I hit?”
but rather: “If this were a real sword, would I truly choose to make this strike?”
From there, posture becomes more important.
Distance becomes more important.
Timing becomes more important.
And most importantly, the mindset of the person holding the sword becomes more important. 🧘‍♂️⚔️

🌿 Perhaps that is why bowing does not make the sword sacred. Rather, it reminds the person holding it to take seriously what is in their hands.

Some explanations of Reiho also emphasize that these rituals are not merely about maintaining politeness. They help practitioners enter the dojo with the right attitude, respect those training alongside them, and become conscious of what they are doing.
So, bowing before picking up the sword is not simply about “following the proper etiquette.”
It is a brief moment in which we reset our state of mind.
We bow to the dojo.
We bow to the person who will train with us.
And then, we pick up the sword. 🙇‍♂️🥋
From that moment, the person standing before us is no longer simply an “opponent.”
They are our training partner - someone willing to place themselves within the distance of a sword so that both of us can grow together.

⚔️ This is why keiko is not simply about defeating someone as quickly as possible or gaining another point in shiai (competition).
Every time we pick up the sword, we learn a little more about how we stand, how we strike, and how we face another person.

As Nobumi Sensei once shared: “Keiko is not about winning quickly today. It is about still being able to stand on the dojo floor tomorrow - with respect for your opponent and calmness within yourself.”

🌱 Perhaps this is also why Kendo begins before we even pick up the sword.
Before learning how to use a sword, we must first learn how to respect it.
And before facing another person with a sword, we must first learn how to face ourselves. ⚔️🥋

Adulting is exhausting… so pick up a sword instead. ⚔️😆

Not to compete.

But to move your body, break a sweat, relieve stress, and get a little stronger every week. More importantly, to become calmer, more disciplined, more respectful, and to keep growing into a better version of yourself.

No experience needed.

Just the willingness to try something new.

🥋 Yushinkai is welcoming new members.
You might discover more than just a sport - you might discover a better version of yourself.
See you at the dojo!💜
