As adults, green sea turtles are the only strictly herbivorous sea turtle species. While juveniles are omnivorous and consume jellyfish, worms, and crustaceans, they transition to a plant-based diet as they mature. The chlorophyll and pigments from the seagrass and algae they ingest are stored in their fat reserves, giving the tissue its characteristic green hue.
